Post Warped Rear Inner Panels

Anyone come up with an easy fix for warped rear inner panels (i.e., under the rear quarter windows)? The leather is fine - it's the underlying structure that is challenged.

Thanks.....

Message board is at: http://members3.boardhost.com/928s4vr/

It's sort of a poor man's version of Rennlist with occasional code thrown in that automatically jumps you to **** sites - my employer loves that.

That said, if you just can't get enough Q&A about 928's, you've gotta add it to your favorites.

Hi Thorn:

The 928s4vr message board is where great things happen. :-)

Yes, the popups are annoying - if they bother you, go through www.safeweb.com. I have not yet seen a **** site popping up (thank god!)...

You should come visit when you get a chance! http://members3.boardhost.com/928s4vr/

Just don't be afraid of women who know somethintg about cars... I do know a little about the 928 and it's history, but I promise, I won't bite! ;-)

See you!

Rick:

The 928s4vr message board went down yesterday, and lost my last response to your question.

Two years ago, when I had the '91 GT, I inquired about having the panels fixed. I doug out the following note from September '99:

King Kovers
2800 Broadway
Oakland, CA 94611
510-832-4455

For black vinyl they quoted $100 per panel, if the panel is already out of the car, or $245, if they have to take it out and put it back in. I did not ask them for a price in real leather.

$100 - it might be a little more these days - sounds like a bargain to me. Where else can you get anything fixed on a 928 for $100??? ;-)

Phil Eskildsen had his panels done there, and supposedly the local Porsche dealer is also a good customer there.

Let me know, what you decide and how it turns out!

Nicole: Thanks for the additional info. I know exactly where King Kovers is located. This is on my list of winter projects along with a stereo upgrade.

Jerry: Thanks - Clay's solution looks pretty cool.

Hi Rick:

Doing the interor panels and the stereo at the same time is a great idea! This way you can have the holes of those useless tweeters in the rear closed, and get the other holes sized the way you really need them.

People who have done speaker upgrades before told me the biggest problem is depth - there is not too much of it behind those panels...

The factory speaker setup is really disappointing! I think, 2002 is the first year that Porsche offers a decent sound system for their new cars. It's from BOSE, and I hear it costs a lot extra (in Europe, at least)...

One other thing you might consider is adding additional sound dampening material back there. The 928's rear compartment has been known to amplify the tire noise somehow; that's why they added all this heavy foam and the additional fender liners from the '91 model onwards. I still would not call my car quiet, but it is noticeably quieter than my first 928 ('88 S4).

My sentiments exactly! I'm considering use of Dynamat Xtreme for additional sonic insulation. Doing research on stereo components now.

Had a Nissan Maxima with the Bose system. Didn't like the sound quality at all. Replaced with Nakamichi head and amp, along with Infinity Kappa speakers. MUCH better!

Actually, the rear panels in my car aren't real bad yet (I've seen much worse). So we'll see.....

Thanks, Nicole

Nicole!

Nice to see you here from 928s4vr! I just got my shark 3 months ago and I've notice and can attest to your vast 928 knowledge.

SL8GT: I just got rid of a Maxima that had the BOSE packed (1996). I thought it was spectacular, and better than the stock speakers in my '85 928. I don't pretend to know a lot about stereos, but I know when they sound good to me.

Dave,
It's not the case that the Bose system in the Maxima was at all bad: in fact it's better than many factory systems. Sound quality is very subjective and has many variables.
My reference points are true audiophile home systems of friends and relatives, so my perspectives on stereo systems are a bit right of center.
