Rear Tire question
I went to the tire shop for my front tires and found my rear tires are pretty much bald also.
Anyway, I am putting on 225/50 Bridgestone Potenze RE730's on front (both), and then the tire guy said that he had some used Dunlop SP8000 for the back if I wanted them...
They were ALSO 225's (my current rears are 245's), but he said I wouldn't notice the difference in performance unless I was going 140+ mph (which I don't plan to do in the streets).
Anyway, is this guy sending me down the river, or is he right. I mean, just a gut feeling tells me not to put skinnier tires on the rear and i am no mechanic by any means.
Thanks

Are they free? If so (and they are a proper fit) the benefit is that you will be able to rotate your tires front-to-back for increased tire life.
If the savings are minimal, buy the fat ones for the back - more grip and they look way cooler when viewed from behind <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hmm, I just posted a reply and it didn't go through. Chris you must run from this clown. You will notice the difference if you put the same size tires on the rear as you have on the front and not just at 140mph. 245's are on there for a reason. My 88S4 has 17" turbo twist rims now and the difference from the 16's even, is quite noticeable. If money is tight go on and get a set of Kuhmo's in the size you need. Should be just over a hundred bucks a tire in the size you need.

Chris...
All I can say about 225's on the rear is that my car had them when I bought it. I also came out of my neighborhood the first time at a 45 degree angle to the road, accidently.
[power on oversteer and an owner used to FWD...]
I don't know how your S4 runs, but my '85 S2 was all over the place with those things! No traction whatsoever, plenty of wheelspin and my heart beating against my ribs like a crazed rabbit each time...
They best be cheap is all I can say! I put 275/40-17 on the rear and it made a difference.
Incidently, I put the RE-730's all around. I had RE71's, which wore out in 10K miles, but then again it was out of alignment [fronts killed] but the rears held up well, in my judgement.

Forget the savings. Forget the looks. You're risking your life on rubber.
Which bungy cord will you use? - The latest technology new one at a price, or that old one in the back?

Chris,
Don't be silly! Tires are the most important thing on your car. Who would ever buy USED tires. There is a reason the guy has them sitting in the back and not on someone's car (THEY'RE USED)! Don't be a sucker. And besides, assuming your wheels are stock, the rear wheel is wider than the front. You can't go rotating them unless you swap the tires on the wheels.

PS Don't let this guy do an alignment for you either!!
