Post Manual Transmission Question

Just bought a 1982 928. Having problems shifting to 2nd gear. The transmission will start to grind. It will only take 2nd gear when the car is on a total stop. 4th gear acts like 3rd gear the rpms are high when I shift to it and 3rd gear behaves just like 5th gear or the other way around. I know that the shifting layout is different compared to an american car. I am a new porsche owner.

Is the tranny broken?

Any help will help

lacast,

I am not sure exactly what your question is.

It is likely that your synchronizers are worn out, this is a common problem with early 928 manual transmissions.

I would first suggest that you have the transaxle oil changed with a high quality synthetic. This has helped some drivers get smoother shifts. When draining, strain the oil through a cloth and look for metal chips. This will tell you if something recently was broken.

It is also possible that your clutch is dragging. Have the movement of the slave shaft measured to see if it is within specification. The actuator is hydraulic, so it needs to have any air removed. The clutch master or slave cylinder may be worn out.

You have a two plate clutch assembly. It is possible that the intermediate plate is not centered. There are instructions on Devek's website for that adjustment.

The shift pattern is "dog-leg" first gear, i.e. 1st gear is down and to the left. 2nd gear is up and to the right (like a 3 speed shift or how you would shift a p/u with the granny low-gear, starting in 2nd gear).

If it is just old worn-out synchronizers, learn to double clutch for down shifting and how to match RPMs for upshifting. A rebuild is pretty expensive.

Hope this helps.

LACAST - Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the club. My 928 was my first and only porsche so far (once you've had the best, forget the rest!). I had the same symptoms as you when I bought mine. I ended up replacing the 2nd gear synchro (along with 1st and 3rd to be on the safe side) and the grinding noise is now gone. The early Porsche designed synchros are a known weakness. Depending on your mechanical ability replacing the synchro's is within the abilities of a moderately mechanically inclined person. Before you begin, make sure you get a set of the 928 Workshop Manuals (9 volume set) and go over the procedure. Prices for the manuals range from $250 to $350 (check out e-bay) but will more than pay for themselves after your first job. This board is an incredible source of information for anyone at any experience level. Make sure you start checking all the 928 sites and the new owners thread at the top of this board for more info. If someone else will be doing the work make sure they are very familiar with the 928 model before they start twisting stuff. Good luck!
