Winshield coating...
Anyone have any experience with using suction cup accessories on the windshield (Radar Detector, g-tech, etc...).
My Radar detector came with a warning about using it on a Porsche windshield because of the special plastic coating on the inside, so I mounted it using the visor clip.
BUT - now I want to play with my new G-Tech, which has just one larger suction cup (about 2" diameter).

Hmmmm???
I do know that the glass is coated.
I went to a speed meet once and they stuck this paper sticker on my front windshield - I flipped out!!!! It took me about an hour of delicate massaging to finally get the bloody thing off my glass.

Having said that, I have also had one of those little notepad thingys at the center of my windshield for about 3 years. It attaches with a suction cup 2" in diameter. I have removed it many times to clean the glass and it has left no marks or caused any problems with the coating.
Not saying you shouldn't be careful about it, just that I have had no "personal" problems with a suction cup on the windshield.
Cheers

Thanks, Bernie...in doing some further searching, I found reference to it in a newer model's Owners Manual that indicated the problem would be in affixing stickers (inspection labels, etc) to the inside of the windshield without using a "foil" base for it.

If your car has the "Securiflex" windshield, it consists of 4 layers: From the outside, it's glass, plastic, glass, plastic. This was done to minimize injuries when someone hits the windshield in case of an accident.
This was an option in Europe, and I have no information on whether it was offered in the US. However, if your car has it, you need to use a special cleaning solution to keep it from "clouding", and be expecially careful about any type of stickers.
This feature never caught on, and was discontinued rather quickly. With the airbags preventing windshield contact, it wasn't necessary anymore anyway.
A few years ago I freaked when I took my '88 S4 to one of those detailing places, and the supervisor used a black pen to write on the inner side of the windshield, what kind of scent I wanted. Thank god this car did not have a Securiflex windshield...
