Default replacing Crankshaft Position Sensor

OK...I set about checking the resistance of the CPS, while investigating an intermittent stallout. I was pleased at how easily the CPS plug extracted from the harness socket, only to discover that part of the CPS plug remained in the socket. Marvelling and tumbling the remainder of the CPS plug between my fingers, it totally disintegrated. That's right...into little pieces.

So...I must replace the CPS. I have already received a sampling of "Warning! Warning! Will Robinson!" cautions about how easy it is to find oneself pulling a flywheel so as to drive out the rest of a lodged CPS probe.. Would very much like to avoid this. I've squirted penetrating oil onto the hex bolt and around the base of the probe itself. What other advise do you have as to how best to extract the probe, before I get into this?

Thanks very much in advance....

Mike

just replace the connector.

I think they all fall apart, but you can get the bosch 3 pin connector for it from a place called Eagleday I think. Ive never purchased from them but i know others here on Rennlist have.

if you do have to get it out ( i imagine its a $150 sensor) its a pain, there is usually a bunch of oily crud on the bell housing side but also there is an o-ring that seals it and that is what got me on one of them that i removed. One of them i cleaned off the bottom of the probe (engine out, so much more difficult for you to access) and swiveled and pulled it out, the other i couldnt get out without hitting with a mallet via a large wood dowel, and even then it was a pain. IF you know it works, then just replace the plastic female connector.

Just did this last week and mine came out quite easy.
Maybe I was just lucky, didn't expect it to be hard.

OK...good point. That there were 3 pins were a bit of a surprise. Across which should I see 1k ohms?
