Default 1st gear clicking 83 5spd

The manual torque tube utilizes 3 shaft bearing carriers, do these make any noise like a clicking sound? or is this a dogtooth problem? the shifting seems somewhat loose, possibly the old syncro's...but the bearing carriers are something I have not thought about. Anyone been up against this sound in a pre85 OB?

My '79 does the same thing. I believe it is a dog tooth issue. Besides if this only occurs in 1st it cannot be the TT; otherwise, you would hear the click in every gear.

Actually it is usually a problem with one of the 1 st gears hitting on one of the reverse gears an internal alignment issue requires a complete dismantle of the gear box and shimming of the gears away from the interference. The old very brown 1980 does this seems the replacement gear box I grabbed one weekend had that issue. I seldom use 1st gear

The two most economical fixes.
1) Play the stereo louder.
and
2) Don't use 1st gear. (Jim's favorite)

Will this result in a noisy box in general? My tranny seems to make a "shhhhhh" type noise. Loud enough to hear over my Borla. I am relatively certain that this is not a TT issue since the car made the noise before and after I replaced the original TT wit a rebuilt unit.

I only have the clicking in 1st and nothing that I can really hear over the road/engine noise...that sound could be something else.
