Hey everyone, thanks for all the information. I suppose I will just have to find a nice S4 to drive and see what I think. What do you all like better, the manuals or the automatics? I have always liked the manuals, but so many people with 928s love the autos.

Definitely prefer a manual but that's just me! Everyone has their preferences and I would suggest choosing what you prefer. Note that finding a good condition auto is much easier than finding a good condition 5spd.

Try both. I suggest a manual first. Then, as with all P cars, spend considerable time in one of each type, including some twisties and also in traffic. If you try to take my automatic '86.5 car away from me you had better bring back up goons and all better be armed. I LOVE my automatic 928 And especially because it starts in first every time because it is an '86.5. (or so I'm told). I want another '86.5 automatic, and then maybe I'll search for another after that. The only other automatic car I have loved so much is the Mercedes 280SL roadster, but of course the box in my 928 is also a Mercedes. To each his own though.

Jay, what's important is what you like. Some GT style cars have soft ride, auto, perfect sound deadening. Other GTs mimic a more aggressive, in-your-face kind of performance. The 928 is both. The auto is a great car, but the 928GT is much less refined and even somewhat brutal. The GTS 5 speed is a very nice mix of both.
I don't think you would be disappointed with a well sorted GT, but if you want the penultimate, I would say price no object, get the GTS with 5 speed. More grunt, and a fatter *** too. Alternately, get a 86.5 or later and boost it.

Don't discount the older cars!!! My '79 with Koni setup will outhandle virtually anything on the road. You can make performance enhancements to any year. And while my car isn't "fast" by today's standards (even a new Honda Accord V-6 is almost as fast 0-60 as an S-4 !), it's not all about outright speed....it's about the whole experience.....and there ain't nothing like a 928. "Cause any year 928 is better than no 928 at all! (but ya gotta get the 5 sp!)
