Spray the backsides of the pads with some stuff appropriately named "Disc Brake Quiet" which is available at most auto parts stores. I don't like the **** that comes in the packets since it's messy. The stuff I mentioned comes in an aerosol can and dries to a tacky finish.

I've been a motorcyclist for many years and you can't turn motorcycle rotors. In addition the price of motorcycle rotors tends to be even higher then Porsche rotors. So no one ever does anything with their rotors. I've changed several sets of brake pads on bikes and the new ones never bed in on an old rotor surface. The pads wear more rapidly and the increased vibration tends to shake the new pad apart. I've tried every bedding procedure in the book and I've changed dozens of sets of brakes through the years. If the new pads aren't introduced to a machined surface, they're not going to perform to their potential.

Bill - is that a legit procedure? Seems pretty extreme!

Re. chamfering the pads - the Hawk pads have a HUGE chamfer built into the leading and trailing edges.

Not yet - going to try harder (brake pressure) tomorrow.

My 93 GTS also has squealing brakes, but only under one condition:

When I take the car for a (*ahem*) "spirited" drive for maybe 20 miles or so, then come home and slowly pull into the garage - with lite braking so I don't clip the side of the garage - they squeal like crazy! And they do this every time.

Otherwise they never squeal.

Mine squeek on light stops. Never on heavy stops. Dunno, when the wife drives there is never a squeek.

I'd try some of the spray I have here just in case, when I change mine.

Old thread I know...but did the SPRAY help with the noisy brakes? Mine are about to drive me crazy.

Roger - did you uncurl the tails before you put them in? How long before they stopped squealing

I used the disc brake quiet spray on the back of the new Mintex pads I put on the GT and they squeal like crazy. If I'm pulling into the garage with the windows down, it hurts my ears. I put the same pads on the 90 S4 without the spray because it didn't work on the GT and they haven't made a sound. Neither car had the cups behind the pads and I didn't have any new ones to install. Do you sell them, Roger?
I'm going to try the Porsche bedding procedure Bill posted and see if it works.

I turned down my rotors, installed new Axxis MetalMaster pads, and did the Porsche bed-in.

No anti-noise pads or spray.

No squealing wheels (yet!).

I had rear brake squals for a long time - whenever I was braking lightly. I tried factory pads with silencers, Mintex pads with silencers, new discs, copper paste, my gentle touch,... nothing helped.

When I had the calipers off, I made sure I scraped all baked-on dust off the metal sliding plates that touch the ends of the pads. Then we installed a set of AXXIS pads, no Porsche silencers, and plenty of copper paste on the back and edges of the pads' backing plates.

On our initial test drives, we did not hear any squeals at all. Unfortunately, we had the bleeding problems, so I don't have a final verdict. But it looks promising.

try a light skim of RTV silicone on the backs of the pads the copper stuff is the the high temp stuff but the clear is good to 1200' just bed the calipers in the silicone and let it sit overnight there should be no squeeling after

good luck
