Unhappy Dash pod instruments gone dead, Help!

The temp indicator, fuel level, speedometer, odometer, tachometer and guiltometer (AKA fuel consumption gauge) are all staying at zero, cept for the fuel consumption which is pinned at 30 (30mpg in my dreams!). The oil pressure and voltmeter are both reading normally.

I'm to blame for this, as I spent the evening working on the stereo system. Its a very tangled mess of wires left to me by the PO, the PPO, and guys at MASA car audio. I moved the amp for the rear speakers to the front and removed the front one, which was malfunctioning. I also disconnected the subwoofer and its amp entirely. There's still plenty more I need to do, including getting a new amp and subwoofer.

All the gauges worked befor I stared messing with it. The car is running fine, engine sounds good.

Did a wire come loose? A fuse? Evil elves snuck in while the pannels were off? I'd really like to have my instruments back.

My GT has a fuse for the dash pod. Perhaps your 82 does too. YMMV.

Hi, Jessa!

Your guess is probably correct - check fuse # 12 (8 amp).

We see a LOT of problems caused by improper installations of stereo systems and alarm systems. Good luck in getting yours straightened out. Let us know if we can help.

I only know of two places where a single failure can bring down the entire panel - the power feed, which run thru fuse #12, and the ground wire.

Get an electrical tester, which is required equipment for any 928 owner who messes with her/his electrical system. The best kind looks like an icepick with a clear handle and an attached wire with an alligator clip - should cost $6 - $8 for a good one.

Clip the alligator to a good metal ground point, turn the ignition switch on (don't crank the engine) and touch each of the ends of fuse #12. Thelight should light on each end.

If so, look at the plugs at the bottom of the central power panel, and count from "A" on the left end up to "H". Find the red/black wire in terminal H6. This red/black wire is what feeds your instruments. Check for 12 volts on the red/black wire. if there is 12 volts, the problem may well be in the pod. If there is not 12 vdc here, but there is on fuse #12, the problem is behind (uh-oh)the fuse panel.

When you had the console apart did you find several 'UN-ATTACHED' wires.
Someone else posted about them the same week I did my Blau swap. I also had...as I recall..one thick red wire with a spade connector and one or two heavy Brown wires joined together on a common female connector. I taped them off and have had no problems. There is the possibility that when you were connecting things you may have connected the wrong wires -rare.
Do you still have hand brake warning and O2 warning...one and the same unit. That skinny panel.
Do all of your pod check and warning lights come up when you turn the key? Is your sHARk alarmed?

There's power at terminal H6 and fuse 12, so I guess that means the trouble probably at the pod somwhere. I looked for un-attached wires under the dash pod and found none.

All non-pod lights come on normally. Other than the passnager window switch that hasn't worked for about a month (haven't gotten to it yet), nothing else in the car is malfunctioning.

When the key is turned, the only check and warning lights that light up on the pod are the small light at the bottom of the voltmeter, the two indicators on the lower portion of the volt/oil panel, and the 'coolant' indicator on the lower portion of the temp/fuel panel. The central warning light on the dash pod does not light, however the one on the centre console below the climate controls does. The turn signal light flashes normally when the turn signal is engaged.
My car is alarmed, with the orignal factory unit.

I will be going into Console Country within the week, but I don't believe this will be much help to you in Pod Land.
I am hoping this reply generates a knowledgeable response by keeping it on the upper end of the board.
When I get into the console I'll do some basic disconnecting and see if any thing drops off line in the way of gauges.
I had hoped to remove my pod for re-furbishing -
the "dweaded cwacks" - by now, but time and a hideous cold front passed thru and looks like it'll be snowing on Saturday. Dwat!!! I work for the Highway Dept. So maybe next weekend.
If you haven't found a solution I'll post what I find. I need a set of manuals!!! Anyone got an old set? I'll even pay with REAL money.
