I recently installed a subwoofer in my '86 euro, and if you are considering installing one, I hope you benefit from the experience. I selected a Bazooka Tube EL8A-HP, 100W self amplified tube. The tube is simple, costs just over $100, and considered relatively low end by audiophiles. Many prefer separate amplifier units. I'm not a basshead or headbanger, I just want deep full bass range.
The subwoofer is mounted parallel to the rear tool panel. I installed an additional clip in front of the tool panel. The clip is identical to the two existing ones used to hold the cargo net. The new clip is mounted 12" to the left of, and in line with, the existing passenger side clip. There is no danger of puncturing the fuel tank attaching the clip mounting screws at this location. The tube is attached using mounting straps provided with the tube, and passed through these clips. With this mount, removal and re-installation is quick and easy. The 8" tube diameter fits below the hatch compartment cover and it cannot be seen from outside the car. This installation does not pick up electrical interference from the fuel pump, as I've heard, can be troublesome. So far, hard cornering, jackrabbit starts and quick braking have not budged the subwoofer. The sound is absolutely terrific, even at 3400RPM in 5th on I-4.
