Dave,
North Hollywood Speedometer at:
<a href="http://www.nhspeedometer.com/" target="_blank">http://www.nhspeedometer.com/</a>
should be able to fix you up.
I've often wondered how many sHARKs odometer readings even come close to accurately reflecting true mileage. With the exception of from the showroom to garage guy's -lucky bastards - I don't think anyoneone can say with -without crossing their fingers that what you see is truly accurate.
I suppose there might be a broken factory seal or some maintenance records with a newly purchased sHARk that could indicate a repair to the unit.
When I was looking for mine, easily 1 in 5 had non working odometers. Additionally, if you run back thru the archives you will see not a few references to this subject.
I doubt anyone purposely disabled that puppy, If it's the only doubt you have about the shark the only reason you should sweat it should be: "if the belts/water pump were changed at 60,000 and the odometer is reading - let's say - 72,000 and the odometer is broke, when do I need to change the belts again?" Try to be sneaky, ask the current owner when the belts were changed - the miles and year - somewhere in the conversation ask how many miles he puts on the car per year. AND MAYBE HOW LONG HAS HE/SHE OWNED THE CAR.
Do the rough math, it's kinda like those math extraction problems: ex., " I bought the car with 55,000 four years ago. Changed the belts at 60,000 three years ago. Retensioned the belt at 62,000 three months later. And I put 4 or 5000 on her a year. She has 68,000,000 showing.
The odometer just went out at Christmas. While not totally deceptive the numbers don't look right and you might have to dig a little deeper. Find out who did the work, if not available start getting a little concerned. Use the new/potential owners inspection guidelines, should be one on the last 6-7 pages of the board, or the Nichol's Site.
Bottom line, it could be everything the owner say's it is. Then again, it might be better to pass up a 'Golden Chance' than to be potentially, stuck with -your choice here, pick one- the constant worry of chunking a belt, or, actually chunking the belt and paying for some serious Head repairs AND a new timing belt/water pump.
This doesn't have to be a total crap-shoot.
Good luck, HTH

A couple of days ago after a fillup I hit the trip meter reset while driving and sure enough my odometer went bust. I wish I had known... <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
How hard is it to remove the speedometer?
If I get the odometer fixed, will they reset the miles? From that point on it's probably hard to proof the exact mileage once I would want to sell it, which I probably won't. But I would want to know how to go about the whole mileage thing anyway.
cheers,
Sab. <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

It doesn't really matter if the trip odometer was reset while moving, or standing still. When I took mine out, that gear was so brittle you could barely pick it up. It just crumbled into about half a dozen pieces in my hand. The same exact thing happened with another 928 owner in the area when he took his apart recently.

Thanks for the suggestions, I don't think I hit the reset, I am awair of that trap as I also have a 944S. However I could have while driving at night and fumbling with the *****.
A little history on this car, I bought it without any records at a very good price knowing it was going to need work. It was stored (parked) outside for 12 years, paint shot, seats look as if a major cat fight took place inside. However the car is solid, drives quite and smooth, I had a mechanic friend, who is familiar with Porsches look it over, he was going to buy it if I didn't. Odo shows 093,333, it was working, I saw it move when I test drove the car. There were/are a lot of electrical gremlins in the dash which I am sorting out as I go.
So far I've replaced the timing belt and all other belts, waterpump and did the regular service items, oil, filters, plugs, wires etc. This week I will start taking it apart in preparation for painting.
Best guess, I probably pushed reset.
Thanks for all the response, let me know of any hints on the repair.
Thanks - Dave
