Default Thank you Dr. Bob

I was driving this morning to Palmdale for the PCA monthly breakfast gathering. Just as I was arriving in Palmdale, my car began to lose power. I pulled off the freeway, and as I rev'd the engine there was an obvious power loss. As I rev'd the engine, it had no power. After a few minutes the car cooled, I attempted to start it and it seemed to run fine, I tried to drive it back to SFV, about 10 miles into the drive it lost power again. I called Dr. Bob to get some advice and he immediately left Glendale and drove the 30 plus miles to give me assistance. Eventually, I required the assistance of AAA. I was able to get my car to Jules Hauer, and he will take a look at it on Monday.

I just wanted to publically thank Dr. Bob for taking time from his weekend and driving out to Palmdale to help a fellow 928er. Thanks Bob

Dr. Bob helps more people with 928s than even he knows! Great knowledge. We don't hear as much from Wally P these days and several fellows are filling in nicely, Dr. Bob is one. BTW, a Rennlist search of Wally P's advice is invaluable. He could have written a repair manual on 928s if he'd wanted to.

This sounds similar to the issue I am dealing with at the moment.

Hey Ryan, how is everything in the lone star state?? Bob suggested that it might be a fuel pump or worst case scenario, I'll be shopping for a new engine . Keeping my fingers crossed Dr. Bob is one of the good guys I'll post Jules diagnosis on Monday.

Who is this Jules Hauer? Why not tow it to Precision?

I doubt you would need an engine. Fuel pump would be nice, those arent bad, but when mine went out it wouldnt fire period. But I have no other suggestion so i guess we will see.

I hope its something stupid and minor.

Good luck Larry.

Dr. Bob is a stand-up member of the 928 community. When we are lucky enough to find him in town, or when he's within reach of an internet connection, his advice and assistance is top notch.

I always enjoy his hospitality when I have some spare time in LA.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm trying to keep my car-ma good, on the chance that some day, when something serious goes wrong, it will happen in my own driveway. Friends will drop by and help fix it.

Larry's car has some interesting symptoms. Car runs/drives OK for 5 miles or so, then loses power. 90 degrees out, oil press and water temp are fine. Checked coil and ignition wire connections, they are OK. I was thinking it might be TBF in the making, but the car cranks briskly and lights right up on restart, except for the power loss...

We tried the spare LH brain and there was no improvement. Larry had enough AAA to get it flatbedded to his favorite mechanic, who was at his shop today and was willing to wait for the car to get there. It made sense to do that, rather than try to tweak and pull on things on the side of the road as the temps rolled past 100.

With luck it will be three relays, as Jim B often reminds us. The fuel pump was running fine though, and Larry had experienced 4-cylinder mode prior to this event so he determined that this isn't the same. With any luck, Jules will call Larry and let him know it was a relay though! Tune in Monday when our hero is forced to say "Oh my! Is that all it was?"

I wonder if you washed the car before you left if so one of a few things could have happened, One the connector over the hot post under the hood got wet and or is corroded usually due to the plastic cover being lost, stolen, forgotten. Next best bet the fuse panel got wet usually due to the bottom of the blower box seal leaking. if you can lift up the carpet and look at the CE panel and just above it , see if you have any tell talke marks of water dripping , this will look like a powder running down or coming off of the blower grate, under the passenger foot well on the bottom of the dash. If there is any indication of leaks the best thing to do is remove every relay and check them for corrosion and also see if they might have filled with water, also do all of the fuses as well , if any fuse has corrosion replace all of them and reseal the blower box before washing your car

The car is missing the shield over the hot post. Hmmm. Car was washed/cleaned the day before according to Larry. The challenge is that it ran for for 30+ miles before the symptoms appeared. I had the carpet out of the pass side footwell to plug in the spare brain, and there was no evidence of water present or past.

I'm with you on the relays, remove-replace to get all the pins wiped clean if nothing else.

First step should probably be to plug in a hammer or spanner to read a few fault codes and see what the car thinks about the problem. The symptoms to me say something like oxygen sensor fault, Hall sensor fault, or maybe a temp sensor II that's out of whack. Something that's OK when the engine is at less than full operating temp, or that the brain tends to ignore until then.

Ron-- Jules is one of the better local 928 repair guys. He's a 928 owner, and takes care of cars for several listmembers among others. On Sepulveda in Van Nuys IIRC. Larry will fill in more, I'm sure. For the SFV crowd, he's 45 miles more convenient than Greg, important when there's towing involved. Not saying we won't be down to visit with Greg before we are done, of course.

Larry-- I think I have a spare jump-start terminal shield in my collection of things. I bought it for Tim's car (now with Bob Bingham in Georgia) but he escaped to Alaska before I could give it to him. It's $6 part, way off the deep end. I'll stick it in the car for you for next time we meet.
