Question Broken Sensor Pin - Do I need this?

I took off the flywheel cover to check flex plate loading and crankshaft end play and a small part fell out that looks like a gear tooth. Looks like it used to be attached to the flywheel and perhaps works with the sensor which is visible in the top of the housing above the flywheel. You can see how it gouged a few places in the housing before breaking off. I think it has been broken for a long time. However, the car starts and runs fine. Do I need this?

hi

there are two sensor that look at the flywheel area. the first is the most important, this reads the actual teeth of the geared ring behind the starter ring. this sensor supplies timing information to the injection and ignition ecu's.....if this is broken the car will not run at all.

the second sensor picks up on two pins that protrude from the back of the flywheel, i think you have one of these out. this sensor will not affect the running of your car. it is only used, with the correct test gear, to check engine timing. the sensor terminates in a little round connector on the left rear of the engine (car left)

hope this helps.

That's it. Thanks johnb - I always wondered what that connector was for. BTW - my pinch collar moved aft 2mm when relieved. Crank end play was .007". I made a bracket to hold a dial indicator with one of the housing bolts.
cheers...
