Auto starter bypass
Finishing my auto-5spd conversion to my '87. Anyone know what I need to do to make my starter work, now that I have a manual trans? Should I be bridging a relay? ..or maybe bypassing something in the now unused rear harness by the trans?
Also, do I have to install a switch by the clutch pedal too?
Thanks!

I think that you pull relay XIV and install a jumper between 86 and 87.
No clutch switch on the 928 - Porsche apparently figures that you are smart enough to push the clutch in or to have it out of gear before you hit the starter - or perhaps they thought that you might need to move the car off the tracks using the starter some day.

Doh! Are you sure about the switch? The tech ref and parts catalog and manuals show a switch of some kind there. Although I would like to think they have more faith in us... and I do remember using the starter on my '79 to get me safely off the road once.
Also, I've just heard 30 and 87 need to be bridged. I'm sure one combination will work... or start a fire.
Thanks Wally! Appreciate the response.

I think that switch has a cruise control function.
-Indeed, a 928 5 speed will move when the starter is engaged and the clutch is out. The last time my brother borrowed my car I watched him do just this.
Again, the LAST time he touched the thing.
Normy!

I believe that if you jumper terminals 30 and 87, the starter will immediately start spinning. Make sure that it is out of gear - or pointed at something cheap!
Of course, I just checked, and my '90 GT has a starter relay in the panel. The wiring diagrams only show the auto wiring.
The clutch switch is for the cruise control, so the engine doesn't hit the rev limiter when you push the clutch in.

Wally,
You were certainly correct. 86-87 did the trick. Thanksa bunch. Started it while still on the stands, so as not to launch it through the garage wall, if perhaps my new clutch and manual trans for some reason conspired against me.
Now I have a new problem. Took the car for a really short run. 1/4 mile(maybe). At low speeds I can hear a scraping sound in forward gears, but not in reverse. Like metal against a brake rotor. Brakes are okay. The trans has gear oil, but does it need to run a bit before it gets lubed up? Ran it on the stands a bit before driving it, and didn't notice any noise then.
