Default Brake parts

Almost done with all four corners
new rotors
new pads
new ABS sensors
new braided stainless-steel brake flex-lines.

One bit that I don't understand, however...
On the front brakes, between the dampening discs and the brake pads there is a thin metal plate that is the same shape as the brake pad backing plate. They are found on both sides of the front calipers but not on the rear calipers.

New ones did not come with the new pad set.

What are these thin metal plates?

they would be aluminum shims to help eliminate pad squeek.

I thought that was what the dampening discs were for.....?

So do you use dampening discs AND these shims

or do you choose one or the other?

One or the the other. Aftermarket pads are often supplied with these anti-rattle plates to cut down on come-backs and product returns. The market for the glue-on Porsche pieces isn't big enough to warrant aftermarket supply i suspect, and many owners neglect them on pad change.


FWIW, if did manage to glue the original parts to the replacement pads using hit-temp RTV. Seems to be OK so far (six years) but I seldom use the brakes, and never hard enough to get them super-hot. I started that off as an experiment, and still have a set of new sticky pads ready if they start to ge noisy.

There are titanium inserts being sold by some to limit heat transfer...so if it is hard and not magnetic it might be titanium
