Default What a difference!!! (new motor mounts - RV)

Today I finished up the rest of the WYAIT things and completed what started out to be just Motor Mounts and Oil Pan Gasket on the 84. Interesting how a quick job ballons into a major project.

After taking it out on the road - "What a difference!" The vibration is gone and the whole drive train seems tighter and smoother. I also replace the lower a-arm bolts which seems to have made a difference in the steering because it doesn't feel as squirrelly - but that maybe just me.
I also discovered that the whirring noise that I thought was the torque tube going bad was the A/C compressor (clutch, bearings or both). After removing the belt for the compressor the noise is gone.

No vibration, smoother, better steering, less noise - Yeah it was worth all of it but - what a job - I'm glad it's finally DONE!

Cheers,

hey Tom, do you want more to do ? How are the fuel lines? if they are original it would be a good time to replace all of them, Also if you did the MM and pan gasket did you replace the 2 hoses to the Power steering resivour? You might want to condier this as well and its a good time to flush out your rack. Nice car and good luck on your project, Stan

Shane - it is amazing what a difference they make. The old ones were collapsed and were riding on the metal so no wonder the vibration was so bad.

Stan - interesting you mention fuel lines. Last year, I was up at Shanes place and got to see the devastation old fuel lines can cause and I decided to replace them on both my cars. I did find out that they are NLA though. I have found where they can be rebuilt and this is actualy my next project. I want to do fuel pump, filter and all rubber fuel lines. As for the power steering - I have replaced the pump and the short hose (res to pump). I need to do the pressure and return lines. I would have done the rack with the MM's but wanted to make sure the rebuilt pump worked before replacing the rack.

The car is slowly getting restored, one project at a time.
Cheers,

To finish off this job, I highly recommend installing the solid steering rack mounts. You think your steering is tighter and more responsive now...

Tom, My 83 has always felt a little loose or squirrelly. I never knew really what to get in there and replace, steering rack has not leaked, but it looks like I'll go with Mike's advice and go with some solid steering rack mounts. Do any of the Big 2 or 3 sell these BTW?

Carl at 928 Motorsporst has them. IIRC they are around $62. That's a few bucks cheaper than replacement rubber pieces, BTW. I helpd Rob Edwards put these into his car during the MM project, and I was impressed with how good the fit was. A snug fit that just took a few taps into the rack ears, and the bolts just -barely- fit through the center. Just the way you want them! We made short work of the old bushings with a couple flavors of Vise-Grips, with a pinch-twist-pull and out came the old ones. Line up the new ones and put the rack and the lower shield in place, snug up some nuts and go drive!

Reminds me, I need a set for my car too...
