I want my first gear!!
My 85 shark always seems to start from 2nd at red lights and various other stops......will shifting to N and then back to D force it to start it 1st?
I know that they are designed to hold 2nd for better fuel efficiency (at least that's what I've read). I'm getting jealous of you guys with the manual trannies!

I really like the way mine starts in 2nd, nice smooth acceleration and no downshift to first while stopping.
If I want to start off in first all I have to do is hit the accelerator quickly and it goes back to first immediately - works great. I just have to do it correctly to not spin the tires.
Yes, the other way is to start in 2 , which really means first and it should shift automatically to 2nd then you shift to 3rd and Drive.
At least this is the way my 87 works and it works so well I can actually say the 928 auto is as close to a manual in terms exhilaration as I have driven.

a typical start in an 87s4 (my perspective)
From a stop...gear selector in "2" (tranny is now in 1st)..Floor it...Tranny will shift to second by itslelf... OR...you can shift it your self by quickly going from "2" to "3" and back to "2" in a quick motion.
If left in "2" the tranny will run all the way to the rev limiter...then you manually select "3"...hold it there as long as you want and to shift to "4th" place the selector in "D"
I have a ball driving my AUTO manually

<---Born smart ***. I apologize in advance...
I can think of a great way to ensure your car is in first gear, though it will take big $ and many hours of grease, tools, and sore knuckles.....
Ditch the slush pump and convert to a 5 speed!
normy~
'85 S2 5 speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Dave,
Do you have a manual kickdown switch installed? It is very easy to do and gets my 86.5 to shift down to 1st while slowing to a stop at around 15 mph. It really makes a big difference in how an S car will drive. The cange was not as dramatic in my 87 S4.
There are many good write ups, but here it is in simple terms. I am sure others will add or correct me if I am wrong.
1 Remove drivers side carpet to locate the kick down button.
2 Note the approximate size of the wires attached to it.
3 Go to Radioshack and get some similar size wire, 2 wire splice ins, a toggle switch, and connectors to attach the wires to the toggle.
4 Use the splice ins to attach a length of the wire to each of the wires that attach to the kickdown buttton. Use enough wire to give yourself a choice of locations for the toggle. Under the ignition switch, glued to the bottom of the pod is my choice.
5 Attach the wires to the toggle. It dosen't matter which wire goes to either side of the toggle.
6 Place the toggle in your preferred position.
The car will now stay in 1st longer, and **** down with much less throtle. It will also shift down to first at around 15 mph when slowing.
If you do not notice a big difference there could be other issues.
