Question Head lights

On my 82 928 I just hooked the head lights back up along with the linkage for all of the proper operating things. Remember, the car was in a wreck and I am putting it back together. I turn the **** for the lights two places and the lights come up but don't turn on until I flash the brights once and then it all works normal so far. Is this the norm? And can the fog lights and brights be on at the same time. Sometimes I can get this to work if I turn on the lights in a certian pattern. Fog lights on first and then head lights and then brights. But if I turn on the fog lights after the brights are on the fog lights do not come on. Any thoughts?

The lights should come on by themselves as soon as they are raised - shouldn't need to flash the brights.

The fog lights should turn off when the main headlights are switched to hi-beam. Remember what they taught us in driver's ed about not using the high beams in foggy conditions? That's why.

Normal operation on an early (pre-S4) USA car:

Headlamps should come on as soon as they come up, in either bright or dim.
Operating the lever should change the headlamps from bright to dim and back.
The headlamps should stay up, but go off if you turn the light switch back to park (first)position.

The fogs should burn only when their switch is pressed, and the light switch is in the park (first) position, OR when the fog switch is pressed and the headlamps are on in dim.
The fogs should go off when you change the headlamps to bright.

Sounds as if there may be a problem with your headlamp relay. That is a relatively expensive relay ($75) so you might want to try cleaning all of the connections in the headlamp system first, and deciding whether you can live with the present situation.

Then again, if the light switch itself has problems, failing/crud turning into a conductor...
Headlight switch is around $40.00. Keep in mind it is what does all of that fancy switching mentioned in the reply's. The relay and the switch being the common thread to all of these functions. Think of this as an option to plan A.
Maybe someone has removed and cleaned that puppy and can give you a quick, 'how to'.

Randy, Wally, and John thanks for the tips. I pulled the relay out and and cleaned the points. They looked fine. Now the lights are working as they should 90% of the time. I will keep on tinkering with the system and hope for the best. I did notice that the relay has a loose part floating around in it when I shook it. Problem? I don't plan on doing any night driving soon so I will live with the current situation. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
