power steering leak

Hello, I purchased my 1988 928s4 in february and have fallin in love with this car. My second love is this forum.It has been a very helpful to my learning curve.Now for my problem,i have a lot of fulid in my right boot.I feel the rack seals have failed and will have replace it.My question is can i remove the belt and drive the car untill the rebuilt rack has arrived without any damage? Thank you

You may find it easier to live with the leak than drive your car without PS all together. Ever drive an 5 ton old grain truck? Same thing.

I refilled it once and all fulid leaked out in only 20 miles,car is now in the garage.My car has unknown maintenance history,what other things should i do while the car is apart to replace the steering rack?

90% chance that you need motor mounts. If so, they will make a noticeable difference in the feel and comfort of the car.

Having the rack out is half-way there ....

Wally: You say Tazz probably needs motor mounts: Do you base that on PS fluid draining onto same or is it something else? He doesn't mention the mileage. Just wondering what tipped you off. I rode in a 944 w/140K and there was no doubt about the vibration from bad mounts. YIA

Based upon the theory that 90% of all 928s with their original liquid-filled mounts need new ones. The 10% that probably don't are low-mileage GTS cars.

Unfortunately, there are few overt symptoms of bad mounts - but the improvement in smoothness is pretty noticeable when they are replaced.

If you are changing the steering rack on an '83 or later 928, and the car has the original mounts, I would suggest changing them.
