Post oil drain plug - particles

Hi everyone,

is it OK to have some particles on the engine oil drain plug after 3k miles?
I had asked a question in reference to this same issue once before and got a mixed response. Answers ranged from, there should be nothing at all or disaster is imminent, to a bit of metal may be normal.
I took a picture this time around and would apreciate some feedback.
Does this look normal? When wiping it off with my fingers it almost feels like graphite dust. Which it is obviously not since its attracted by the magnet. Now these engines don't really have a lot of moving metal parts, where does this come from?

The car runs better then ever, no oil consumtion, no smoke and lots of bwaaaaaaaaa....

Should I be concerned?
cheers,
Sab. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Didn't you recently have your engine rebuilt Sebastian?

If so, a bit of metal dust would be expected during the break-in period (a few thousand miles or so).

Change your oil and filter again in a couple months and check to see that the number of particles on the magnet are diminishing. If not, there could be a problem.

Thanks Randy,
yes I had the engine rebuilt and it was the second oil change. I think the particles this time around are a bit less than the first time. When you guys change your oil is the plug completely clean?
Jerry,
the camera is a fairly old Kodak DC260, which has about 1 mega pxel. I think the new once are much better.
regards,
sab.

Cool

Dammit!

Well, I just discovered something. My '85 S2's oil plug is just that- a threaded plug. Is what SAB has portrayed what I'm supposed to see?

As to pictures- I have a Kodak DC280, and it takes HUGE! Pictures. I haven't figured out how to make it or Adobe Photodelux minimize the pics...

Normy,
(from memory, I have PD on my office desktop computer and can look on Monday, but I usually use photoshop)

Load the picture into photodeluxe, click:

*advanced tab

*size tab (I think that's what it is called, find the tab across the top that opens image size, canvas size, etc.)

*image size

change image width to something around 450 PIXELS
the height value should change aotomaticly. 640x480 is about full screen, 320x240 is 1/2 screen size. Sizes of images for stuff like posting here should be around 400 to 500 pixels in width.

click OK

your picture should render to a new, smaller size. Save the image as a jpeg with medium quality. Save it with a new name as not to save over the original.

Note that you should use pixels, not inches, picas or whatever.

Also note that you are changing the image size, not the canvas size. That's where many people make the mistake, they try changing canvas size.

If you have trouble, email me on a weekday and I'll walk you trough it when I can be at my copy of Photodeluxe at work.

Normy - re. digital image sizes, most digital cameras allow you to preset the image size as well as the image quality (at least my Nikon does).

By presetting, you don't have to use software to reduce the size of the image, or the image's file size.

Look through the camera manual for instructions on how to change the Image Quality (usually Fine, Normal or Basic) for creating smaller file sized images (lower resolution) as well as how to adjust the Image Size (represented in pixels - usually 1600, 1280, 1024 or 640 - the smaller the number, the smaller the image).

For example, by presetting my camera to 640 size and 'Normal' resolution before taking the pictures, I was able to directly upload the pics in this topic without having to resize them through software:

Talking

Thanx again!

-I haven't had a chance to look at Irfanview yet, but I've managed to minimize the size of pictures as advertised....many thanx!

As to the metal particles....though I am not a mechanical engineer I would think that it is normal for some particles to show up on your magnetic plug- afterall, that is why it is there! If you are concerned, most auto parts stores sell an oil analysis kit.

Be safe-

Normy!
