Red face Running Rich with the AC on

Here are the facts. AC on, sitting in traffic watching the temp goes up within a needle width of the top white line. Accelerating between traffic lights feels like the engine is bogging down. My air fuel meter confirms that I am indeed running very rich(stuck on blue). Get to my destination and when trying to restart while it is still very hot the beast it starts but not before struggling. Felt like a low battery.

A mile or two after turning off the AC the temp drops and the symptoms disappear. I suspect a bad temp sensor. Which one?

Not sure this is related, but on two occasions during a frog choking rainstorm the car ran rich. too. My mechanic suspects water got sucked in somehow, wetting the filter.

Ideas?

Nice snag on the airbox!

I was bidding on it as a spare anyway.

Thanks. For some reason the air box tops seem to separate at the seams.

Btw, looks like we share similar tastes in cars and colors. Is yours an AT or manual?

Unhappy

Well, I wanted to update this thread a bit. Turns out the car is not running rich with the AC on. Actually, it runs rich if I turn the car off and let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then re-start. A week ago I bought a vacuum gauge and put it inline with my computer. Today I actually got to see what was happening and it's pretty interesting. With the AC on the gauge shows typical behavior. 15-20 lbs of vacuum and drops and builds under acceleration. But, when driving the car after running the AC and letting it sit with the engine off, I see the air fuel meter go full rich upon start up and the vacuum drops to zero under even moderate acceleration. This also cause the A/T to shift very harshly. This takes a few miles to clear up and restore proper vacuum behavior.

Given this new info does anybody have a guess on why using the AC empties the vacuum reservior? Could it be a bad solenoid under the console or the check valve at the four way connector near the brake booster? Probably not the latter since braking seems uneffected.

I love a good mystery, don't you?
