Post Rear Cam Covers

I have searched through all my books and manuals and still have no answer, so im coming to all of you for help.

I have a small oil leak coming from my drivers side rear cam cover. I have removed it and it appears that the gasket us hard and brittle and has broken in several places not to mention that the three bolts were loose.

That brings me to my question. There are four holes in the end cap that bolts to the motor. Why then are there only three bolts that hold it to the motor. There is one to the far right, one to the far left, and two towards the bottom. There are also four holes in the cam cover. Three of them are threaded for the bolts and the fourth hole at the bottom is not threaded. What is that hole for?? Could that be where the oil is leaking out of. It makes no sense to me. I looked at the gasket close thinking that the gasket would cover the fouth hole, but all four hose exist in the gasket. I looked at the passenger side cam cover also. It to has the same four holes with only three bolts holding it on. That side does not leak at all. I have not checked to see how deep that hole is. I will check tonight. Maybe it does not go all the way through. Maybe there was supposed to be an alignment pin inserted in it or something.

Any help would much be appreciated.

Thanks.

There is no alignment pin, nothing goes in the "fourth hole".
Notice that on the passenger side head the right-hand side bottom hole is used (has the bolt) and on the driver's side head the left-hand bottom hole is used. (This assumes a LHD car!)
The same part # end cover - and the same part # gasket - fits either head this way. In fact, the same gasket # 928 105 189 02 is used from 1978-88 on all 924S / 944 / 944 turbo / 928 16-valve engines.
I'm not positive, but I believe the unused hole may act as a vent of sorts.

Yes, this is a PORSCHE part - look closely and you can see the part # (beginning with 928) just above the "country of origin" for this part.

Interesting...... but true!
