Default MD Covered Bridge Tour Today

Great turnout (73 cars; mostly 996s and 987s; 3 928s, Non-Porsches: 1 Mini Cooper S, 1 BMW 530i, 1 Pantera, 3 Lotus Elises, 2 Lotus open wheelers, and 1 VW GTI)

The ride was excellent; a bit long at 123 miles, and it took us 5 hours (ouch) but we had plenty of nice stretches where we could open it up. The roads were in excellent condition and all of the people in the area were very friendly; they would often stop at intersections and let our huge phalanx of cars pass through what would otherwise be long slow left turn waits. Beautiful country out there, including many tree-canopied runs. Drove the whole time with the windows down; only got hot sitting in the direct sun waiting for turns, but it was otherwise very comfortable.

The ONLY bad part was the joker behind me on the first leg of the ride. He was driving a nice older 911, possibly a turbo. He wasn't around long enough for me to find out exactly what it was... but he insisted on going the speed limit or less; this was a performance ride, with performance cars. I felt obligated to try to stay connected with the rest of the field, so his antics forced me to back off the throttle more than I cared to... the benefit being that I got to play more catch up! At the first break, he tried to yell at the event organizer that the group was going too fast (while everyone else complimenting him on what a great ride it was); his wife was with him, too, and she wasn't helping things. The organizer promptly told them both to shove it! Gave them their lunch money back and sent them on their way.

I spent most of the ride behind a 996 carerra and a matching Boxster in front of him. It was no problem staying stuck to his bumper when I felt like it. For the last leg of the ride (there were 3) I was behind a super modified Cooper S; that thing was quick! I could hang with him but I didn't get the sense I could pass him. That was a well equipped ride for sure, and the driver handled his car well, too.

Here's a few pics. Snapfish is not cooperating right now, but I'll post more later.

Also played with an '06 M3 on the way home. Pretty amazing that my 19 year old 928 kept pace with him upto about 100 mph before we ran out of room. He creeped past me just a little, but only barely.

Hey Mike,

Nice finally meeting you.

I got a kick out of the questions from Jerry (996 pilot) I was following on the last leg. BTW, very nice guy.

First was, "So how many horsepower do you have?". And second (addressed to Mike and me), "How has 928 ownership been (i.e., reliability and maintenance cost)? Gotta say, my 928 did great behind a 997 and a 996. This ego thing is pretty infantile and stupid... but it feels great.

BTW, learned today that after running for a while, if you turn the key to acc. (or the first click), the fan comes on if hot.

It was great seeing some 928's on the tour... Someday I'll buy another shark...

Huge turnout at the meeting place... Over 80 cars including 2 Ferrari's... 73 made the tour... We were about 1/2 hr. behind schedule due to the size of the group and I spent a little extra time at the 1st break point taking care of a small issue... It's the first time in 10 years that I had to ask someone to leave but I won't tolerate abusive behavior to a fellow participant or in this case PARTICIPANTS...

123 miles with no incidents... Everything went smooth and everyone enjoyed the roads... I highly recommend that you take the time to drive the route again with just a few cars... It's a blast

Gina and I had a GREAT time putting this together for everyone... Let's do it again soon

Tell that organizer guy that I'd have bought him several drinks for that move! Bravo!
