Sure, the tinkering is fun and, when it works the way it's supposed to, fulfilling too. But what it's all really about is the driving.
Today, popped in the door arrestor kit (20 min job) and Nicole's leather auto boot into the consol (30 min job) - all looks great and works as advertised, especially the leather shift boot - nice upgrade for a more modern look (shameless plug for Nicole and her stuff).
At this point, I am happy to just stand there and admire the car, since it sits like a timeless piece of sculpture. Finally, I hollar for the Mrs, we jump in for a short drive, and 3 hours later, after a long drive thru the rural, twisty back-country roads of SW PA, you couldn't wipe the smile off my face - these cars are truly amazing. Take a beautiful day like we had around here, add to that some great driving roads not far from the burbs and the city, and you can enjoy getting lost and just going and going and going.....

I recall a visit to Pittsburgh in my Rabbit. On the way in along some winding canyons with a river below, and I longed for my P car. Someday I may get back that way with the 928 and really enjoy the drive.

I recall a visit to W. PA on the top of my motorcycle...
Anyway, I know what you are talking about. Getting the significant other to enjoy your hobby is the ultimate automotive accesory. Most of us can't make that work-

Yesterday was the Luckenbach Car Show and a destination for a lot of clubs. I went up with a small group - one Lotus Elise, 'vette, MB C45? AMG, Boxster S, me and two twin-turbo 300ZXs. It's been raining during the night and still threatening so we had a low turnout. Left at 8:00AM heading into the hill country. GREAT drive and blue skies by the time we got there .
At first we thought leaving so early wasn't such a good idea but we were the first (public) to arrive! They had to open the gates to let us in. To hell with $20 per car to park inside; we took the free parking spots numbers 1-6 next to the main gate.
Great drive, company and show. LOTS of custom rods.
