A/C compressor problems

A/C compressor problems
My engine threw an A/C belt. And well, after 8 hours of fighting to get all the other belts off, I got this one back on.
Went for a drive and the belt melted and burned clean off.
I figure it is probably the compressor..... DUH.
So any suggestions on how to change this thing, or should I just get my baby to an a/c shop?????
Thanks,
Paul G.

Are you sure you aren't just overpressuring the compressor... if the cooling fans fail - or aren't coming on with AC - the compressor may build enough resistance that the belt on it will slip (& shred) - even with ~ factory belt tightness. I'd have the AC checked out - assuming its the compressor could be an expensive mistake and anyway you'd need to take it to an AC shop to have that done...?

If you have some A/C experience and the tools (guages, etc.), the 928 system is pretty much standard. Porsche is not known for their fabulous HVAC. Assuming the worst (a locked compressor), it will have to be replaced or rebuilt. Generally, rebuilts require a core good unit, and a locked one is often rejected as 'unrebuildable.' Depends on where you get it. You have a Nippondenso 6E171 which are fairly common and relatively inexpensive. Typically, rebuilts run just over $200. And assuming it's locked up, your entire system should be properly flushed. If you have to use a shop for everything, you should budget over $1500 IMO.

Well depending on how your compressor imploded.....and (most important) if you have A/C tools that work with R12.....will determine how you move forward......either way you will want to make sure that the system is throughly flushed out to get any metal out from the bad compressor!
