Are Brake Damper Plates Required?

On 4 piston brakes are the thin damper plates that slide between the pads and the pistons required or are they just for squeel supression? The reason I ask is because I don't have them and I don't know if I should complete the assembly without em or what.

From my experience the damper are not required. I run OEM brake pads for daily driving and race pads for track days. I do not use the dampers to make it easier to change the pads. Without them, I can slip one set out and put the others in just by undoing the retainer clip.

Do they actually do anything? They are supposed to inhibit squealing, I think. Did you have any squealing in the 15k miles that you had none in there "Jerry 87 928s4" ? How much were they?
