Post Rear Hatch Release

It seems like a lot of 928's have a problem with the interior hatch release. Mine do not work. What is the usual cause here?

First, before you get into all of that shim-stuff, remove the rear-interior panel (tool panel). Then remove the actuating motor from the mounting support....it separates from the latch at the pop-off ball/rod. Then close the hatch and get inside and see if you can "pop" the hatch by actuating that "rod" by hand.

After chasing all that "shim" stuff I discovered that my actuating motor had a stripped gear shaft inside, and it would cycle fine without a load but it slipped when under load, so it wouldn't open the hatch latch. When I cycled the thing while looking down into the opened latch it all looked good, so I was fooled for quite a while!

The hatch-release actually worked fine, by hand.

Generally, that is the MOST over-engineered function I have EVER seen!!

My problem is the reverse; I cannot open my hatch with the key. It'll only open with the interior release!

Brett,
Have you tried some WD40 in the lock?

Brett, try gently (somewhat) pushing the hatch down while turning the key.

Hello Ernest,
That isn't the problem. In my case, the key actuates the mechanism, but the pawl does not retract far enough, and the fact my housing is cracked probably doesn't help..... Think I'll see how much Stan Shaw wants for his housing, buy it, and see if that helps at all.... If not, I'll get in touch with Tony Euganeo, and see if he can make heads or tails out of the problem.....

After finding my housing cracked, I've looked at a few other 928's, and several of theirs are cracked also, so I'm not holding my breath that getting a good one, will fix my problem.

BTW, ALL the ones that were cracked, the cracks were on the right side!

My hatch release works both from inside and outside w/key. My problem is that the locking lever gets stuck in the open position. I have to use the key and turn it to lock with the hatch up and then close it shut.

The alarm-equiped hatch-side of the latch mechanism is not frequently found unbroken. Mine was broken and I tried to find one from the Big 3, among other sources. Everyone had broken ones. They are available from Porsche, however........ for a price!!! like $300.00+ The non-alarm units are about $100.00, but the alarm will no longer arm or disarm from the hatch. A bit of a PITA if you use the long key generally.

Years ago I had the same problem, I increased the height of the pawl by placing three small plastic straps around the pawl - I made it as a temporary solution and it works since then, and I forgot it totally until I saw this discussion - Three small plastic straps around the pawl.

Boyce,
Unfortunately I have no picture of the solution - Erik do not have a digital camera
But that's simple, when you actuate your hatch release motor you see a pawl moving into the hole for the hatch lock - If this pawl becomes too small it cannot release the lock pawl - Therefore I made this moving pawl bigger by placing three small plastic straps around the pawl
Remove the whole unit and you can easily imagine what happen
Yes, I have to buy a digital camera soon, but up to now I used my pocket money for spare parts for the 928

Erik,

I like your solution. I had the same problem years ago. I tried replacing the plastic piece but it did not help. Eventually I wrapped a thin piece of aluminum around the pawl. It worked for a few years but then came lose, causing a jam and fracturing the pawl throw. Now I am forced to use the key because I can't justify spending a lot of money to replace the entire mechanism. That release mechanism has to be the most poorly, over-designed thing I have ever seen.

I know that in my engine compartment there is a wire that runs underneath the secondary battery terminal. Upon disconnection the rear hatch release becomes inop.

Before you dismantle the hatch mechanism,, trace the wiring.
