Default bad fuel pump

I need to replace my "88 fuel pump. It is leaking out the outlet end at the perimeter. This end looks like it is sweged on like a pop can top. The pump design was changed in "89 and looks more substantial. The questions are:
1. Are these pumps interchangable
2. If yes to 1. is newer pump better
3. Were they redesigned to fix this perticular issue
Thanks, Ralph

I have had an S4 (45psi) pump on my K-jet car (75psi) for years, now back to correct unit (different length), no problems. A leak where you have it is pretty unusual in my experience. Briefly, my belief is that if the pump physically fits the pipes, and its EFI, it will work. Just find the best priced Bosch pump (of the correct part no) you can.

PET calls for PN 928 608 104 02 up to 1988 then for the 928 608 104 03 PN for 89 and after, If the pump is leaking just buy a new one for your year, and dont drop it , the internal magnets are glued to the inside of the can, also check the internal fuel tank screen and also if you have a internal tank pump it is wise to replace both of them, to verify this check at the tank where the fuel hose attaches, if you see wires plugged into this fitting then you have an internal tank pump, also replace the fuel filter. The usual reason the fuel pump leaks is because either it was clamped too tight in the hold down clamp or someone tried to hold the pump ( usually with a set of channel locks)to remove either end of the piping. the pump is sealed at the crimped end with an O ring once the pump case has been deformed, it will usually start leaking and then it is a throw away item. I've had my pump on and off it seems like 10 times in the past week......its really pretty easy...

Stopping the leaks...not so easy!
