Post Yokohama Tire question/comparison

At the risk of resurrecting the GREAT TIRE DEBATE, does anyone have any experience with the Yoka AVS ES100 tires ot the Falken FK-451? I'm told that Falkens are made by Sumitomo. Tire Rack compares the Yokos to the Kumho 712s and the Yokos fare better but, of course, cost more.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Jim -

When I got my shark - it had some GAWD-AWFUL Eagle GS-C's....NOISY...SLIPPY...YUCK!

Bought a set of S4 wheels and got the AVS-EVS100's. I LOVE THEM! Quiet ride...STICKY - GREAT tire for the $$$. And look really cool, too!

Recently acquired some 17" 996 wheels...with some P-Zeros'...NOT IMPRESSED with these tires. Was going to use the S4/Yokos for AX and DE....Disliked the P-zeros so much - DOGGED them out at a DE last weekend just so I could go ahead and order the Yoko's - Which I did about an hour ago (rears - still lots of P-Z tread on the fronts).

Mark's Shark gives them 2 thumbs...err...uhh....FINS Up!

I currently run Toyo Proxies on the front (225/45/17) and Kumho 712s on the back (255/40/17), and they are GREAT. Very little treadwear in the 5,000 miles I've put on them.

Personally I recommend the Yokohama AVS db S2. They make the 928 sound like a limo on the inside, and corner like it is on rails.

Great price too..

my 2 cents...

I recently bought a pair of Kumho 712s for the front, and the car immediately started pulling to the right, while the steering wheel leaned to the left on straight roads. No replacement or alignment did help.

Then I switched to Yokohama AVS Sport. The car now tracks straight like an arrow.

I don't think I'll ever buy another tire with the name of a North Korean City... ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone have experience with Avon ZZ1. I have them on my Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon but it's really hard to tell how the tires perform with two kids in the back seat! Do they wear quicly or is it just bad alignment on my Volvo?

Jim.....my hero......I think I had the last post out there on this (about 6pages worth). After looking at all the input, taking price also into consideration (meaning no Michelins this time), I plan to put the Yokohama AVS ES100s on this week.

I would say that the one item that "disturbed" me a little about the Kuhmo's was, they were either great or the person would never buy gain.......leading me to think there could be a quality issue with them. Sad thing is they look like they stick great, handle well, and are no doubt at a great price. But, the Yoko's are just about $100 installed ($114 for the 245-45/16s in rear).

Hi Jim,
I have Falken 451's on the rear, and Falken 326's on the front. They appaer to be good tyres but the 326s appear "hard".
Falken tyres are made by OHTSU in Japan - I have used OHTSU truck tyres for 30 years - and this Company has made excellent car tyres for years. Their truck tyre are excellent with a great reputation
Regards

Again, thanks for the comments. All told, I have more hours into this tire decision than I did in the car purchase decision itself (I found the car one Saturday morning on the net, flew to Montreal on Wednesday and put it on a train back home on Thursday and flew home on Friday!)

Back to tires, the Falkens clearly have some history to fall back on but the shoulder on them seems too inward. Today I scoped out the Firestone SZ50 and was impressed by the testing on Tire Rack but the fronts don't come in the 225/40/17 I need. The closest is a 235/45/17 which adds .4 inches to the diameter which will possibly cause fender rubbing.

I think I'll stick with the ES100s; frankly, there's just too much product to choose from and price is an object.

Bob, where are the 6 pages of posts that you had on this matter?

Thanks for the feedback

I have the Yoko AVS sports on all four corners. The only thing that I have noticed in the negative department, is the amount of debris that flies off the back tires. There is always some noise of debris flying up into the rear wheel wells. I did not notice this with the old Falkens on the car.
