I'm not sure how it works, but it seems to be often found as a little metal tab stuck to the drain plug magnet.

The manual specifies GL-5 and so does every differential case for which I've ever changed the oil. Just because the GL-4 makes your tranny shift smotther, doesn't mean it's not wearing the ring and pinion or differential. Maybe it's safe. Maybe it's not. Porsche seems to think it's not safe.

Ix-nay on the 1st gear ownshifting-day. I do it every now & then too, just to hear that nasty back-pressure rumble. It's a very delicate maneuver, though. The reason for the "dogleg" 1st -is because the engineers intended for the car to be started off in second under normal conditions- as long as you dont ride the clutch.

This isn't the engineering rendition that I have heard.

I heard that the shift pattern is "the European Race Pattern" for a 5 speed transmission. It was designed in this pattern so that start-off in first gear uses a shift position out of the "H". Then, the other 4 gears usually used in racing are easily accessible in the simple "H" pattern.(assuming that the track is fast enough to never need first except for the start-off)

To me this makes sense.

Starting off in 2nd gear in my '89 GT feels like a really bad idea for the clutch.

Thats the same story I had heard. And it goes along with all the other things they designed into the 928.
