Question Test pipe or not?

I have posted this a couple of times over on the 944 board with no response so I thought i'd give it a try here.
Whats the difference between installing a test pipe and just gutting the cat, if any? I have been told that gutting the cat basically serves the EXACT same purpose as a test pipe. But, I have also been told that the test pipe has been designed to not mess up any of the computer stuff and that gutting a cat would mess up some things. I would much rather pay $30 to have it gutted than $190 for a test pipe but if it's not going perform any better or screw something up, I will gladly pay the $190.
By the way, I live in South Carolina where we have no automobile inspections so i'm not worried about my car not passing inspection.
Any suggestions or comments on this would be grreatly appreciated.

Steven,

You do not need a test pipe nor should you hollow out you cats. Hollowing out the cat is not going to create the air flow that a test pipe would. With that, I found it to be cheaper to have a exhaust shop make the test pipe. Hollowing out a cat makes for some weird sounding exhaust, check with a couple shops and you will find they can fabricate what you want for a price between the two considerations you listed...Good luck!!

Hollowing out my cats was equivalent to gutting a beat while he was still alive. No risk on the computer and the car definitely runs better. My brick was beginning to melt. On my 87 there is a pipe extending into and across the cat and some wire mesh that must be made from some space metal from Roswell. A severe bitch to break this stuff loose. Still have some left in mine. If you do go at it use a pipe and a loooong screwdriver. The one advantage is the original system is all stainless. If somebody will do the job for you for $30 bucks, jump on it.

Question

Steve,

Lucky you! you get a questionable answer.
I'm not sure if it was you or not but there was a post with at least a few answers on the 924/944 section concerning the cat issue.
The concensus was - sounds a bit odd to me -
to POUND a pipe through the cat as a by pass of sorts. I'll look for it tomorrow.
The post was recent, I believe sometime in August.
LOL
keep em' rolling
