Awww c'mon Nick, it wasn't that bad, was it?

I'll tyell you what, I switched to a different SCer belt, and it's made a huge difference. I found the GoodYear "Gatorback" belts suck! If you thought it pulled before... you should ride in it now. Better yet, if you come back over here, I'll let you drive. You buying that boat?

BTW, I thought I was going to get a trip to Germany in August, but it got moved to the States. I haven't forgotten about your offer.

Back ON TOPIC: When i drive casually, I **** at 4500-5k RPMs. But when I get on it, I do kiss the rev limiter. The SC'd cars would blow up without the rev limiters, that's for sure.

I'm with 84-928S-inChicagoland,

Around town I usually don't go above 3000 in first and second. I usually follow the Casis light, which sometimes comes on under 2500. Then on the highways, 5k-6k feels about right. I've only been in the red a few times.

I like to take it to 4k rpm and use the auto box like a manual.

On the highway 3rd gear is perfect for just above speed limit downshifts to take her up to the red zone.

Mine "feels" like it wants to shift at about 4000 rpm, and that's usually where I do it. My mechanic says I need a new distributer cap, and that's on the list for "next time".

I'm wondering about the rev limiter though. Does it limit accelleration as well as top end? I can imagine that the torque of accelleration could engage the limiter, as well as outright rpm.

Is there a consensus on using a rotor without a limit on it?

Dang Andrew, why do you get so scared? Do you need a nursemaid when that happens? Or are you able to clean yourself up?

Leslie,

After the last meeting here in Jersey we learned your not shy about redlining your car. As it should be.

Hi Cobalt,

Yes, but the major difference between us is, of course, that I don't s**t myself when I do!

Actually, I don't EVER redline. Perhaps I get close on occasion, to be sure, but I never cross that line. I have never hit the rev limiter. If I even have one. I'd have to ask The Guy if I do (that's the family nickname for Kevin, my hubby).

No, in all seriousness, I shift mostly around 4000-4500. Yes, even that morning.

I dunno, in my heart and mind I KNOW that the car can go higher, The Guy has said so many times, but when I hear the engine screaming like that it just makes me feel like I need to shift. That's probably just a holdover from my younger days when the only sticks I drove were a Hyundai and a Ford Fairmont station wagon. I cannot recall seeing an rpm gauge in those cars, but that's about 20 years ago when I knew NOTHING about cars. I drove them by sound, mostly.

Which reminds me...when's the next GTG gonna be?

To be honest it sounded like you were well into 6k but that might be the exhaust. Half the fun of these cars, all Porsche's in fact, lives above 4000rpm's The 928 is a different animal than the 911 and I don't live up there like I do in my 911's but bringing it just up to redline 6400 is fine and helps burn out the carbon. If I want true speed I bring it up through the revs if just around town 4k-4500 works fine. As where in the turbo and C2 you want to be above 4k 90% of the time.

Then in that case, no doubt it was the exhaust you heard. I definitely have a few leaks.

The Myth that you had to rev Porsche engines came about because a few early race engines 356 used roller bearings on the crank and lugging the engine would pound the rollers flat rather easily so they always kept them spinning ..... Frankly in normal driving using high RPM just wears out an engine ....the motor does not know how many miles it has traveled nor does it care much all it sees is piston travel how many times it goes up and down and piston speed. Those are what determine how much wear an engine has not miles. So grinding around in lower gears and reving to red line just reduces how long the engine should last. One of my 911 race engines was built with the understanding that in 24 hours it would need rebuilding ! 996-997 cup cars last 40 hours. Early cars peak out H P at about 5200 rpm spinning faster just makes more noise. Peak torque is a bit over 4,000 rpm. I abuse the old very brown 1980 on the track and seldom rev it on the street !

Sorry guys... spell check didn't catch that one... or maybe I didn't run it , but bigmac's right... In 2nd gear, most passengers **** at about 4500-5000 rpms.
