Default Electric AC fan?

I thought I read somewhere that the electric fan, in front of the AC condensor, only comes on when the AC is on. I live in Vegas & temp today was 107. When I got home & pulled into my garage, that fan was on. I am very happy it works & am assuming that it comes on when higher than normal engines temps warrent it. Am I correct or might there be a problem?

Thanks!

Yes, there is a thermostat that can turn it on. Some people yank both the mechanical fan and the AC fan, then install a high flow electric fan hooked up to the AC fan thermostat.

Yes, thats fine. Some of my customers in your latitude hard-wire that fan so it always comes on when the others do.
