This started out as a reality check for a fellow sHARk owner.
What's that old line...?
You can lie to everyone but yourself. Our guy realized that someone else would have to bite the M-5.
That we have sexy, fairly powerful, great handling rides is a given. But one has only to check the test summaries in Road & Track, or Car and Driver to realize there are a lot of six-bangers, stuffed in sedans out there that can either give us a run for our money or thrash us outright - particularly those of us with 4.5L engines - ... God. I hate facts sometimes.
I have wanted a 928 from day one... I got one!
Now I want a S-4 on up.
I don't need it but I do want it.
FWIW (IMO) I'm with Pierre. There are some built sHARKs out there that can do the deed but you better have the bucks if you are going to trot down the performance gain path.
There's ALWAYS' a faster gun, where do you draw the line?

Last year I tangled with a 540i on the 10 heading east out of Malibu when I had my 92 500E. I embarrassed him easily and repeatedly. Still see that guy around town too. With the same car I tangled with a 2001 (I believe) M5 and got walked. Period. Had I been in the 88 S4 the results would've been the same.

In the process of building a new house right now, so the Stroker Mod is on hold until we get moved in and setteled down (June-ish).

Crank is currently being stored at 928 Int'l for safe keeping. Rods will come from Pauter. 968 Pistons also at 928 Int'l for safe keeping. Still looking for a donor motor though....

Maniac,

The bottom line is your comment about "being able to smoke any stock 928" holds no water, the numbers prove it.

I won't even waste the gas in my 928 or Audi (even if they were stock) trying to chase a 530 or 540 Bimmer, as I already know the result.

John, you're obviously a stoanch Audi fan. Good for you. We've all beaten this topic to death already and you insist on having the last say - So be my guest... I admit defeat. Your Audi and your 928 will whip my 540. No need for number crunching any more.

There. Happy now?

I was just wondering why you guys care so much about keeping up with new cars so much. I have a 77 911 Carrera (3.0) which was a fast car back in it's day but I don't really expect it to keep up with today's modern version. You see, there is this thing called evolution. Cars will always be getting faster. A few years from now they'll probably be producing cars that blow the doors off today's sport cars. Will you guys be comparing your 10+ year old cars to these new rockets? I am sure some of you will still be talking about how your car's are faster. Accept your car for what it is, not for what it can't do. I like to think of my car as a step to get where 911's are today. Sure, not as fast but a necessary step. Maybe, that is it. Where the 928 was discontinued, a lot of you feel like you were abandoned or don't have that big brother to fight your battles. I don't know, somebody please explain this to me. Oh, we do have our share of smoke blowers over on the 911 board, but no way near as many. Also, just because I can run faster than my 80 year old grandfather, does not mean he is any less special. Without him, there would be no me. He also had his time to be fast and I had mine and my son will out run me someday. Is it because the 928 crowd is a bit younger that alot of you worry about speed so much. The 911 board seems more technical, though a times it has its moments. I am not saying you guys don't know about cars, because I read a lot of your stuff and my head spins with the knowledge you guys spit out. It's amazing and makes me realize I have a lot to learn. It just that some of the statements here are so funny like the fasted 928 in South Africa comment. Yeah like someone can verify this. I could see saying your street, but South Africa, come on that's a whole country. Oh, don't get me wrong; I like the comparisons, just some of you seem to get angry about the whole thing. Remember, it's just a car and that's all it will ever be. It replaceable and if someone wanted to, they could build an exact match. It's not family, it's not even human so take it easy. Believe me, I love my car but it's not everything. Before I hear why do I even bother coming over to the 928 board, let me say I really like 928's and incase I ever decide to go that route, I hope to retain some pointers. They were one of the best of there time, you should find pride in that alone.
Happy Thanksgiving.

David0514,

Your post above is perhaps the most level-headed post I've seen on the net for a long time. I've been stirring the comparing-apples-to-oranges pot for the hell of it, and I have to say the response is exactly what i've expected - Ample useless internet babble and you can safely take side bets 'cause none of the "my car is faster than yours" are likely to be proved in real life between the people who argue here.

As for my statement that the Bully is the fastest track 928 in SA... It IS! Hear me out - I've won everything I've ever entered by a huge margin. Why? Because there are no other competing 928's in SA with the mods I have. Not by a long shot. When I pitch up at a local track I clean up amongst 928's.

See? That's my point. I have an unfair advantage over the regular 928 track cars in SA. That's why I've taken this year to prepare the Bully to go hunt even bigger fish... The big bucks rear engined fraternaty. I want a real life challenge, not some hollow victory because I have plenty mods that gives me an unfair advantage! Some people here like to blow, suck, turbo whatever their sharks just so they can boast they can beat a stock Vette or M5.

Was that not the point you tried to make in your thread?

Well, sorry I didn't know you were actually racing track to prove what you say, that's great. Good luck with your pursuit of beating others out side the 928 group, though that is quite a group to dominate considering how nice these cars are. Not blowing smoke here but I really look forward to the day I get to drive in one and check out the 8 banger raw power. I have read and heard a lot about 928's, I guess that's why I find them so impressive, way ahead of their time. Well, while talking about must do's, I can't forget the 914, haven't driven one of those yet either but that's more a go back in time thing I have. Did the 944 Turbo ride, very fast, very refined, again a great car in it's own way.
Take care.

For some people it may be a competition thing, or an ego thing. I'm not going to speak for anyone else, but I want to explain my reasoning. I know that newer cars are often faster than mine. The more money they spend, people can buy cars that are very much faster than mine. Ferarris, Vipers, etc... My point was that I have always enjoyed, and always will enjoy, beating people who spent a lot of money to go fast. My point, is to defeat the person with the big ego, who says that money buys victory at the stoplight. Because sometimes it is skill, and a good choice of cars. What is my ideal giant-killer? A stripped down 240Z with a transplanted V8. That is the kind of car that costs hardly anything, but is faster than many exotics in a straight line. Or a motorcycle. Also cheaper, and faster. Sure, I can get something with a beautiful interior, awesome speed, etc, if I plunk down enough cash. My joy with the 928, is that I have something very close to that ideal exotic, without the overinflated price. What I like to do, is beat the person who *looks down* on a 928, and thinks it is old, or slow. If that takes a stroker, or supercharger, they will never know. The point is to deflate that over-inflated ego... I don't mind if people think it is "cheating" to have nitrous, or a supercharger. All they will know, is they just bought a really expensive car, and just got their butt kicked, by some dude in a car they thought was lame, or slow.

I expect to lose sometimes.
I do lose sometimes.
But it is a real joy to walk away from a new Mustang, or new BMW, in my old car... I love it...

Bwwwwwaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it, the only factor here is money, so what is the point ?
I see these types of threads on just about every bbs going and it always comes down to the same thing, money.
Why not instaead of comparing cars just post your bank statements and then we can pick the winner.

The point is to win without dumping tons of money.
Or at least to win by dumping much less money.
To win with skill, or win with a better choice of vehicle design...

To simply say, "My Diablo is faster than your Porsche 996...", is just a money contest.

But for me to say that my $10,000 bike, is faster than your Diablo, that is about being *smart* about money...

If you want a Diablo because you like it, and it looks cool, that's fine. But if the Diablo owner goes around acting like they just bought the right to look down on everyone at every stoplight, and feel superior, I will be more than happy to step up and embarass them. (With my bike, not my 928... The 928 is for embarassing other cars, like Mustangs...)

K27,

This has absolutely nothing to do with who has more money. If I wanted I could buy or make payments on a 996TT, but I think that is foolish when I can get super car performance from a sub $20,000 928.

The older car can, or can be made to perform as well (sometimes better) as the newer cars at a small fraction of the cost. They also have more character.

That is what it is all about, spending a fraction of the money and having a car that is a sleeper, and one that I won't lose my bank account over. Let's face it these M5s, 996TTs and the like will lose big money over the next several years. Last I looked, my shark is going up in value.
