Probably done in autumn of '77, November perhaps as total '78 MY ROW production was 2646 cars.

Is there a longer number under the windshield or on the fenders under the hood?

"limited production started in May of 1977 by August it was increased to 20 cars per day. The plan was to build 5,000 per year." Lifted from "Porsche Excellence was Expected"

Not really other than being ROW in US and first year car. Its so late in MY that many of the mid MY changes were done long before it came out from production line. This is good as early early parts are tougher to find than just early parts.

9 chars short VIN is perfectly normal for '78 and '79 MY. '80 My has 10 chars long. 17 chars long VIN use started in '81 MY. 9 long is stamped to body little below + post in engine bay.
