Default method for removing tooth from oil pump shaft

I am trying to replace the seal on my oil pump and am having a hell of a time removing the tooth that the sprocket locates onto. Is there any method for loosening this tooth to remove it so that i can replace this seal? I was thinking of throwing the thing in the freezer and trying it in the morning.

Any suggestions. I think the freezer is a good idea for reinstalling the oil pump with the new large o-ring. Maybe it will also be a benefit for removing this tooth so i can replace the seal as well.

why do you remove the tooth?

I am sure my seal just slipped over the tooth unless my memory is failing

You just have to whack the "tooth" parallel to the shaft, the punch pointing the same direction as the shaft, give it a good whack straight back. The nice thing about a half moon key is that it come comes out as it moves because of the round shape ot the pocket.

The gear should slide off, however time does tend to make these things stick. I used a small gear puller and it broke free and slid off.

Getting the tooth back on is just as difficult. Try to leave it alone if you can.

The key needs to be removed to replace the oil pump seal.

I tried knocking it witha punch and hammer and cant get it to budge. Its in the freezer now and I will try to fool around with it tomorrow morning and go from there.
