Upgrading sound system in '89 S4
I've got an 89 S4 who a prior owner upgraded the audio system. oddly enough, it removed the amplifier totally from the system.
Does anyone know of a replacement 4 chanel amp that will push 40-45 watts/chanel, and will also fit in the same position the old amp occupies (right of Passanger seat)?
I really hate to suspend if below the dashboard, and I don't want to place it on the rear deck.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Harry,
'Tis a good news/bad news kinda thing. The good news is that (HIGHLY) dependant on the new system that was is installed you could get a used original amp. I have seen them go for ~$50-$100. (YMMV) You could also look at locating one (or two) smallish units under the seats or in the spare tire well. I currently am planning a relatively simple custom enclosure to mount on the back of the rear seats - as it will be carpeted, and I have rear tinted windows, it will be well-nigh invisible to the untrained observer.
The bad news is a bit more plentiful - I imagine that there is an aftermarket piece out there that would fit your power requirements and located in the stock space. I just have never seen it. The dimensional profile of the general aftermarket amp is flat and wide. This a practical result of the need to shed heat created by the operation of the amp. That having been said, the stock location of the amp, is, well, a compromise if we're being REALLY generous. There is no significant amount of air inherent to the space, nor adequate free air circulation (that I can see) to make up for the lack of space to shed that heat. I believe that even the kids at your local "hack-n-slash-stereo-world" wouldn't put an amp in there.
The other potential problem is interfacing the stock unit with your aftermarket stuff. Without knowing what the head unit was upgraded to, you may or may not be able to use the output of the current head unit. You can of course, do pretty much anything, if you spend some time and/or $ on it ...
Good luck,
Greg

Great News!!!
Just spoke with a person in California (SoundWave, David or Steve - (650) 593-7678). I was referred to them via a posting on the 928 Message Board.
They said Blaupunkt has a new one out that measures small enough to fit in the drawer below the glove box. It's a 4 chanel/100 w/channel. It's some kind of new kind of amp that doesn't put off alot of heat so it can be removed from it's plastic case.
I've asked for literature on it - should be here in a week or so. They're selling for @500.00.

Just seen this same amp in the Crutchfield Cat. for $199.00. Amazing how fast the price will drop on electronics.

I was pricing a completely new Blaupunkt system for mine, and wondering what size the speakers should be and the size of the stock amp. Love those archives.
