Post A/C and Heater fan

I have an 82 5spd and the fan occasionally turns on full blast all by itself. After about 1 minute or so it goes back to its original setting. I thought this was a common problem. Is it a simple fix?

If I recall correctly, this condition has been referred to as 'Magic Blower Syndrome' and is caused by an intermittant failure of the 'resistor pack'.

For a more detailed diagnosis try doing a search for the above-quoted terms at the Rennlist email list archives.

randys right. basically the resistor pack has a bimetallic switch in it. if it heats up enough, the switch activates and bypasses the resistor pack causing the fan to run at full speed. i think this may have been meant as a safeguard to prevent overheating in the climate control system, but most people feel its just a nuisance. it can be fixed by manipulating the bimetallic switch.
look at tony h's site to see how (look under air recirculation flap): http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/
btw, the design seems to have changed sometime around 88 or 89. the schematics show that this switch no longer has the same function.
