what is this transmission safety switch all about?and if activated how do you un-activate it?.auto 1986.5

The transmission safety switch is the usual one found on any automatic transmission. Functions include:
Prevents starter operation in any position other than Park or Neutral.
Turns backup lamps on in Reverse.

You adjust the switch bu loosening the mounting bolts, inserting a 4mm rod thru the lever into the switch, and tightening the mounting bolts.

I don't think that I would be willing to help disable the switch. It is a vital safety system.
