Default (In)famous Y fitting

What is the famous Y fitting and what does it have to do with smelling gas?

If you do a search, you'll find tons of previous posts on the Y connector & smelling gas.

It is a plastic Y fitting at the charcoal canister under the passenger front fender.
The Y cracks and leaks gas fumes which are normally collected in the charcoal canister.
Replace with a stainless steel Y connector.
I sell them for $21 as well as do other sponsors.

Roger-

Do you (or anyone else) ever bother to change the charcoal canister? It can't be terribly effective after 15-20 years, though maybe the broken Y shields the canister's charcoal from getting saturated/used up. They're only $40 or so. I wonder whether a new one would make any real difference in a car with borderline emissions. Probably not, or we'd hear more about chagning them.....

Rob,
We changed one on Doc Mirrors 90 GT and did not see any change.
Apart from that and changing plenty of Y pipes no other info to add.

It may work, but I think it's a space/routing issue with the tubing, which isn't amazingly flexible.

This part breaks on many 928s and causes gas fume smells. I bought the very well made stainless steel "Y" from Nicole and will never have this problem again.

Use the Porsche plastic of the Roger SS Y-fiiting. Don't waste time building a T out of sprinkler parts that will melt from the gas fumes.

Rob-- The activated charcoal is a lifetime thing. It soaks up vapors when the car is sitting, then the engine sucks those vapors into the intake and enhances combustion when running. Only reason to replace is if the cannister gets broken in an accident or during y-connector surgery.

Karen--

Look at the attached PDF for a simple step-by-step replacement instruction. I took the pix with a $800 digital camera back when 640x480 was hi-resolution. The words don't grow old, however.

I found a nylon T-fitting at Ace Hardware for a couple bucks that works fine.
