Angry Body Flex

Has anybody else noticed body flex in their cars when for example…entering a driveway at an angle? What’s normal if any?

Engine cross brace is in place. Have a front window squeak driving me nuts and is dependent on overall temperature that comes and goes and especially when “driveway” entering.

I know…trivial compared to other problems people have but I like to keep up on this stuff.

Yes, I've noticed it and have envisioned a rear strut brace to stop this. Done in Aluminum alloy and "9-2-8" ala the Z.

Thanks Shane...Hope I wasn't biding against you...don't know you EBAY ID...he just won another bid on another GTS book for $60 so I'm guessing I paid too much but I've been wanting one since this past summer so I bit the bullet. I've seen them go for more than what I paid so who knows...However...I did finally score on a "Real" set of manuals for $75 but I had to file fraud charges to get them and they just arrived...WOO HOO...Now I can give my "Mark Shackel****" specials to a friend in need...cool!

Shark_GTS...thanks for the reply...I'm only a "little" concerned about the flex but I do find it odd in a car so well built! Not sure if this is a short fall on Porsche's side or built in for a reason but it's there.

I get the same flex when I come in to the driveway at an angle. I thought it was a result of my car sitting for so long. Yet, when I got new boges it still makes the same noises. Though the leather makes noise too, I can feel the flexing. Nice to hear I am not alone.

Mine flexes a little, too. If i park the car on uneven surface, say, with one wheel being a few inches higher than the others, then the doors don't close as well as usual.

I don't think that could be fixed by a strut brace in the rear, as it seems to flex in the roof/door area (the middle of the car).

I had a winshield wind-noise and a bit of a rain leak, so I went to the local winshield replacement place and the fellow said that the windshield actually is a stressed portion of this type of car body and has to be "properly bonded" in place.

Further, he said that this bond sometimes lets go in older cars and it can be "rebonded" if carefully removed. He suggested that bond failure may leak air, or water, or sometimes cause a squeak.

Interesting…glad to hear I’m not the only one to ponder this. Perplexed as to why Porsche “built” in or allowed this amount of flex into this body style. I don’t recall experiencing this amount of flex in any other sports car I’ve owned. My previous 968 lacked this “flex” syndrome completely. I realize they are two individually designed body styles and the 28 weighs a bit more (to put it politely)

I’ve also have noticed a limited amount of wind noise from the front windshield but placed the blame on a “replacement” glass that was installed in the car unbeknownst to me before purchasing the car.

I think I’ll dig into this a bit more and post any results I find.

Thanks all for the replies.

Wind noise around the A pillars is pretty normal on the 928, as long as it does not make a whistleing sound. In 1990, Porsche added some padding to the windshield trim on the A pillars. It made a little difference, but not too much.

Just for a test, try squeezing some thick foam between the black trim on the A pillar and your windshield, and see, if it makes any noticeable difference.

I found that once you are over a certain speed, the wind noise does not increase much anymore.

Good call Nicole!

If you live in the more temperate portions of the world, places like HOME DEPOT and other "big-box building supply stores" will have extruded closed-cell foam cylinder that comes in various thicknesses and about 25' to a package. I used the 3/8 diameter stuff and tucked it into place under the windshield trim of the A-pillar, against the glass. You can pack it in pretty nicely with a pop-sicle stick. It terminated my leak and wind noise until such time as I can get the car to the winsdshield guys to re-bond it and replace my rear quarter seals.

Nicole,

Good idea! Have tomorrow off and will apply your idea.

I'll post results.
