Post Jack Stand Issues

Got my 82 auto on stands to do the oil pan gasket, steel ball joints, and maybe motor mounts. Got the front up by jacking under the lower control arms as far outboard as possible - I presume this was an OK method. Front wheels are off, backs are on. Been up for a couple weeks now, and I noticed the doors are binding on their latches just a little, suggesting some body movement. Anyone know if this is an issue, or if she'll return to normal when I put her down? Also, lifting the motor a little with a hoist when I get new motor mounts has me a little leery about jackstand safety - with the lower control arms loose, anyone know a good alternative place to put some 'safety' bottlejacks near the front while working under there?
Thanks in advance.

Russell - I replaced my motor mounts/oilpan gasket last spring and I had the same safety concern you mentioned. When I had the engine suspended by the hoist I cut 2 small wedges (out of 2X4's) and placed the wedges between the botom of the block and the top of the lower frame rails. Then I lowered the hoist slightly so most of the weight was being carried by the 2 wedges. This way both the hoist and the wedges were carrying the engine. Another benefit was that the engine was immobile (it tends to bounce on the hoist alone). Hope this helps!

From what I have read DO NOT sit the car on the front suspension when on jack stand, only on the frame lift points as required by Porsche. Search this site and <a href="http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm" target="_blank">http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm</a> where I think you will find proper procedures.

The procedure I use is to lift the cad from a rear lift point, and place a stand under the front lift point. Follow with the other side, and alternate back and forth until the front is at the desired height. Then lift the rear by placing the jack under the center of the rear crossmember, the one that runs under the gearbox. Place the stands under the rear lift points and you are good to go.

For stabilizing the engine durng sump gasket changes, a couple two-by-fours from the floor to the motor mount brackets will let you lower the jack under the sump, or the hoist from above, while maintaining clear access to the sump bolts after the crossmember is lowered.

Russell, there was a pretty thorough discussion about jacking the car up about a year ago. Here is the link: <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=000873&p=" target="_blank">"4 point jacking"</a>.
