Well, that explains the marbles floating around in the engine sound that we could hear at the gas station. You are very lucky those pieces didn't end up in the wrong place. I don't think you would have made it very far if you decided to drive the car any further. Are we going to have another engine install party in the near future?

Does this look familiar ?

That marble sound was from the cam gear teeth/chain grinding against the tensioner. I agree....although it was running, driving it would have been a baaaaad decision. Thank you again for the piggyback ride!

I've got a few parts to order and some cleaning to do first, but I figure I'll be reinstalling the engine mid-June. I'll be sure to let everyone know when that happens...no chance I'll try putting it without assistance.

I've got Big Dave's old tensioner (an offering gift to the shrine) and the pad is still intact.

Also when I got the new parts I also got two new bolts that secure the tensioner to the head and both had a loctite looking substance on the lower end of the threads.

That is nasty looking! Really makes me wish I replaced those pads when I did my cam covers.

Good luck with getting it back together, and hopefully no pieces/shrapnel did any more hidden damage.

Not really....here's mine (comparison of bad vs. normal). The pad was chewed by the gear teeth, but it did not come apart.

Possibly as much as 117K, but I need to go through the PO's service records. They may have been replaced at 65K when everything else was serviced by a hired wrench.

Here's another pic that was on the camera from my Vegas trip...

The pool at the Golden Nugget (nice place BTW) has a huge shark tank...around 10 good size examples in there. Made me homesick for my 928.

from the looks of the piece that broke off, it looks to me like the bolt backed out and then got chewed up. I say this as the threads all look fine except for the top few indicating that the bolt was only part way in.
