Post L Turn signal - will not return??

Recent problem, when I put on the left turn signal and make a turn, the signal lever will not return to the off position after completing the turn. R side works fine.

Any ideas before I start looking? Note I just had the car in for a Front alignment (after I changed the steering rack) and they had to pull the steering wheel to get it lined up correctly, could this have affected something?

Maybe 928s are different, but it's the first time I've ever heard of a steering wheel being removed to get an alignment done right! <img border="0" alt="[nono]" title="" src="graemlins/nono.gif" />

Sounds like they put it on wrong, as well. Apparently now the tabs inside the turn signal switch aren't fitting properly since they "tweeked" the position of the wheel. <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />

Whoever did this to your car, I'd go back for a refund and try somewhere else.

That problem has nothing to do with the alignment and steering rack job.
Some times I have the same problem, if you remove the steering wheel, you can clean/massage/grease the mechanical pin in the switch
Also you can search on this board - I remember I read something like:...... if the clamping band is tighten too hard .... but I didn't BTDT

The tab that engages the turn signal return is on the steering wheel, if the shop does the alignment correctly by centering the steering rack first, and then setting toe in, then a steering wheel adjustment may be neccessary. What interests me is that you recently had the steering rack replaced. If the lower steering joint was as tough to get off as mine, the steering shaft bearing may have been damaged by trying to hammer off the lower joint. Ask me how I know this. If the steering shaft bearing was damaged it causes the steering wheel to sit too close to the turn signal stalk and not properly engage to return lever. Another clue is a slight grinding when turning the wheel from the horn ring rubbing. Just a thought....

Husky,

If you remove the steering wheel, you can check to see if the small plastic return tab on the signal cluster is still there and working properly. This is the light colored piece that the tab on the steering wheel tab hits as the wheel is turned. It's spring loaded and should clear when the wheel turns one way, and return the signal lever when the wheel is turned the other way, depending on wheather the signal is set for left turn or right turn. You can use a small screwdriver to test the action on the tab. Mine had broken inside the signal lever assy. and was only returning the lever in one direction.

The reason why I mention all of this is the real possibility that when the wheel was re-installed straight, the tab on signal cluster may have been damaged. I like to start the steeting wheel on, then turn it left and right when pushing it down on the shaft as to let the signal return tab on the signal cluster get pushed aside, instead of being crushed by the tab on the wheel. If you see how the tab works, you'll understand what I mean.

Greg has it exactly correct. I just changed my wheel from the stock one to the 930 AJ USA version. You gotta be careful with the little bitty inards when you do this, or they will break. If the shop did this then you may want to take it back there and show them the result of their work. If you open it up yourself and things are broken you may have a harder job convincing them they did it. It may not be broken, just mis-aligned, although it is pretty easy to force the wheel on and break the plastic part Greg mentions

Thanks to all for the info. I will probably return to the shop that did the alignment to have them check the steering wheel. The shop did have to remove the steering wheel to give it a final centering after they completed the alignment.

Bruce, I am fairly certain that the lower section of the universal joint is not bent as I was the one who changed the rack, and I was very careful with that joint knowing how sensitive it is.
