Post Front radiator flaps

Hello,
I've always been curious as to why 928's have those flaps/doors in front of the radiator that open and close by a little electric motor. What is the purpose of blocking air to the rad? Doesn't a 928 have a regular thermostat to insure proper warm up????

Thanks,
Tom

there's a t-stat, but the flaps just help it warm up faster.

I believe they were intended to improve aerodynamic performace at higher speeds.

Exactly right, but Porsche decided to get rid of them in 1991 and the top end stayed the same.

I believe Porsche added them to get better drag co-efficient numbers in the WIND TUNNEL (closed position) for marketing purposes. However, the flaps would probably be open at high speeds on the open road...hehe..

Are those the infamous cooling flaps that can be disabled by removing fuse 23 when the engine is off ?

Has anyone done this ? It almost seems too easy... just to get a little more cooling.

Different years used different fuses. I find it is much easier to disconnect the power cable to the flap motor once they are fully open. ;^)

Also, for those of us that drive during the winter, they help in getting the engine warmed up a bit sooner. :^)
