Angry car idles high/engine dies when placed in gear

done a compleye top end job on my 86.5 ccr would not start with the maf hooked up.ordered a rebuilt maf,from one of the big 3,turned out to be faulty.They gave one that works now.now the car starts with a high idle,and engine dies when i put it in gear.what could be the problem?and can i adjust the idle?

Expand on "complete top end job"?
If you mean intake refurbish, then it could be a mountain of various vacuum / false-air leaks. The idle can be set using a 6mm (???) socket on a long extension. The adjustment lives at the front of the t-body between the tubes. Reading your post doesn't indicate a simple idle adjustment to me, sounds like another issue - probably vacuum.
