Hi;
How do I adjust the idle speed on my car??
It's an '83 US 5-speed. What am I looking for??
I "thought" I found it when I found the screw in front of the throttle body, but that seems to be more of a "mixture" screw.... (I think)
Thanks,
Barry

The large cheese-head straight-slot screw sticking up right by the oil filler is the idle speed adjustment.
The mixture adjustment is back under the two front intake tubes on the passenger side.

Is that the one that is about "dime-size" in diameter??
If that's the one, what does it mean when your idle speed doesn't change as you rotate it in either direction?? :-(
THIS can't be good.... :-(
Thanks, Barry

Barry:
As a first check, take the screw all the way out (mind the spring) and make sure that all passages in the "hole" are clean. Accumulations of junk in the air holes can render the adjustment useless.

barry:
with the engine running, and up to temperature, check that pinching off the auxillary air valve tubing doesn't change the idle speed. if it does you have a faulty aux air valve (should be closed at operating temp)
if this is stuck open, your air bypass screw (dime sized screw, just behind thermostat housing) will have no effect on the idle as you describe.
aux air valve is situated on the back of the left hand head (as you face engine from the front) below the air filter box. just infront of the hot water feed for the a/c system. it has two rubber hoses attached, air in and out, plus an electrical connection.
when the engine is cold it allows air to bypass the throttle hence lifting the idle, as the engine warms up, (aux valve is electrically heated). it slowly closes, leaving the final idle speed to be controlled by the idle screw. unless, of course its faulty!
a good squirt of WD40 often cleans and removes any 'krud' from the valve.
have fun!

Hey Guys,
I was also curious about my car's idle. When I don't drive it for a few days and then start it up for the first time the idle is really low and sometimes it seems like it just wants to stall out. You can hear the engine hesitate and vibrate slightly as RPMS are at around the 100-200. From my knowlege, 928s should idle at around 800 to 1000 RPMS. Is that correct? Although the idle seems really low upon starting for the first time, I find that when I drive it, the idle RPM will rise to about 500. Is this okay, or should I adjust it somehow?
