"Lock up your valuables"!
My 3 kids ages 11, 9 and 4 have the entrance door to the garage confused with the refrigerator door. They leave it open all the time! In the winter, the garage is heated to about 60 degrees. I like keeping the door shut. Also, now that I have greatly added to my tool and equipment supply, I would like to keep the garage mahal locked. And lastly, who needs some teenage punk getting in and stealing the 928 just to total it against a tree somewhere?
So, I looked at the options of how to keep the garage locked while still allowing the kids access to their bikes, scooters, skateboards and power wheels toys. We always seem to be going to the garage fridge for spare milk and beer. My wife parks her mini-van in there. Also, the main electronics for my infared CCTV video security system (with 16 channel multiplexer and T/L recorder) is in the garage. Just keying the door and yelling "don't forget to lock the garage" seemed like the wrong way to go. Here is what I did.
I found a company who sells a weatherproof, battery operated numerical touchpad entrance lockset like you might see in a hotel or secure office building. What makes this one unique is that it replaces the entrance latch. I saw many like this which were deadbolt add-ons, but they require you to lock it each time you close the door. The one I bought replaces the existing handle set and locks every time you close the door. I added a commercial door closer and viola!, the garage entrance door now swings shut and locks each time you walk away. There is no need to fumble looking for keys, even my 4 year old can do the 6 digit code to open the door.
This has proven to be a good way to secure the garage while making it easy for the family to still get in and out.
