A quick note - I just had my flexplate checked on my recently acquired stock '88 S4 auto. at 65K miles. I have no reason to believe that it was ever checked before. My mechanic said it moved 1/8" (he's american...), AND note he said that he did it through an opening under the bell housing without removing anything (no need to drop exhaust....). Took him 1/2 hr. (cheap insurance in my book).

This movement is about the norm for automatic 928s. Sometimes worse. Check it again in about 500 miles and see if it moves again, it usually does.

Still no movement, even after repeated dyno runs, and XXX fun run speeds. On the dyno, I laid a big blade fan flat under the cooler, and had still had 160° pan temps after blasts to 150mph.
...

Has anyone tested the back pressure on a stock (multi) cooler system?

I'd like one of these - for all kinds of testing - a digital tester that measures pressure (0-500psi) and temp:

This would be neat to have in the car, although I would prefer a sender/gauge, instead of plumbing hot pressurized oil into the cabin!

Still no movement, after almost 7 months. I check every week or so. I don't think it's going to move.

Why? Don't look at me, I just work here.

The stock system is still in place, with the hose ends capped. I'm working on Honey Bunny to let me buy a 4-post lift. Maybe then I'll be able to do back to back tests.

I just did my 86.5 flex plate check and there was about 1/8th of an inch of flex from straight according to a straight edge. When I loosened the clamp to relieve the pressure the clamp appeared to move about 1/4 of an inch. Is this normal? also does it matter if the 928 is raised front and rear or if just the front is raised and the tension relieved?...Should I be concerned because the rear of the 928 was on the ground. I torqued to 66ft pounds, the clamp and went for a drive. I noticed two things as a result of this work. The first thing the engine appears to run quieter. I had a sound that I thought was a lifter but now I'm not so sure. It was more of a tack tack sound vs a tick tick sound. Secondly I found the 928 to be a little more responsive and the engine turn over when starting quicker. Again a different sound. I don't know if any one else experienced this but I would like to know if anyone has. Thanks for reading .......Bill

Do two things Bill.....remove and cut open your oil filter and check for silver/copper fillings.....this would b e evidence of thrust bearing wear...also, check the amount of crank shaft movement...what you describe is very similar to my experience......a tick, tick, tick sound which i assumed to be a noisy lifter eventually leading to a knock, knock sound and the inevitible......i didnt know about releasing the flex plate pressure at the time so never did it when the engine was in the car.

Bill,

The amount of movement is normal, but the noise is troublesome. It could be many things, and hopefully not the thrust bearing. If you check the flexplate in a few weeks, don't be surprised to find that it has crept back again, mine used to move 3mm within a week or so.

Thanks Guys. I also hope that it is not thrust bearing. I also poured in a bottle of Engine oil suppliment from AC Delco for the lifter noise I was getting or thought I was getting. Unfortunately I did it all at the same time so maybe it was lifter noise??? I'll have to monitor the situation and pay closer attention to my oil changes.....thanks Bill
