Default Tire choice

I've read through numerous discussions and have narrowed my choices to Potenza REO50 Pole Position, Goodyear F1 GS D3, and Whatever the Yokohama Max perf summer tire is. Any thoughts regarding these? Thanks in advance, G. Oh----I also wanted to increase dimensions from 225 45 17/255 40 17, to 245 40 17 and 275 35 17. Is this reasonable on 7.5 and 9 inch 17's?

I'd think you'd want to stay @ 245/45/17 and 275/40/17 to be closest to spec diameters assuming you really want 245/275 widths F/R.

Can you even get 275/35's in 17" ??

Personally I'd avoid going so wide on the front to avoid worse tramlining etc

Would it be a mistake to change the specs at all? I just thought that, barring a wheel change that it would be nice to try something slightly wider without creating a new set of problems.

Not at all. There are calculators online to keep your aspect ratio while increasing tyre size.

Wider is NOT better once you exceed the rim by too large a factor and handling will quickly degrade. Most racing organizations simply regulate the maximum rim width that they allow in a certain class and competitors are free to use as wide a tire as they wish , those who use a really wide tire just go really slow in the corners !

I realize there is a point of diminishing return but am not sure of that threshold. The sizes I have now are about as flush with the outer rim as possible without exposing the wheel to possible curb rash.

Tirerack in the specifications section for each brand gives a recommended rim minumum maximum width and the shows section width based on a given rim width. They are concerned with SAFE and not with optimum handling performance (they just want to sell tires) so generally speaking the minimum rim width is "safe" but not a very good idea.

I have the Goodyears on my car at the moment & I love them. I took off Mich Pilot Sports that weren't even worn down all the way to put on the GY's. That's how dissatisfied I was with the Mich's. My opinion.

I just went upstairs here at work (I saved two of the old tires) to look at them. They are Pilot Sports with the 'V' shaped tread pattern, not the PS2's.

OK. I threw away Pilot Sports also way back when, who knows how old they were. On the two Caymans I drove to test, there were Pilot Sport II's and Michelin racing tyres and the PS2's were INSANE they were so good, quiet, sticky, predictable.
